SS Amps That Will Run 2 Ohms

bully said:
You started the thread with my choices. Soundcraftsmen and the Yamaha M-80/M-85 are rated in excess of 800 watts into 2 ohms, and a review of the M-80 actually went over 1000 watts into 2 ohms.
And the little giant, the NAD 3020 is a crazy little thing that would happily drive about any load--maybe not loud, but be in the hunt.

Did you forget he started also with the ultimate one......the Sansui BA-5000?

All of the current McIntosh SS autoformer amps actually have 2 ohm taps, and all of the Threshold S and SA amps are stable to 1 ohm. Most of the later years' Levinsons, especially the 33 and 33H are very happy down there, as is the Adcom 5802 and Audio Research D400 Mk II.

The OP has a great point though, unless the mfr rates it at 2 ohms, you're just asking for problems to run it down there for long.

Jimfet, what model philips and BGW??

I have a 5781 and a 750C, are these the ones you've used?
The 5781 and the 750A.
I use the 750A as we speak. My brother now uses the Philips in FLa. One power meter does not work so I gave it to him.

What kind of price range is there for his (Van Alstine's) amps? I believe he runs stuff out of his home.

He does indeed. No dealer markup! :)

The OmegaStar 260EXH is $1,399, and the OmegaStar 440EXH is $1,699. Those are the 1-ohm rated amps...the cheapest standard amp is $899. The Fet Valve hybrid amps are the most expensive. Link below. If I had the coin, I'd have a full Van Alstine system at home, but I don't, so I can't. :sigh: Spectacular sound, though.

Are you sure about the GAS Son Of Ampzilla?

I have a Boston Audio Society (BAS) test report, by Alvin Foster and Wally Swanbon, comparing low-priced receivers and they claimed the GAS Son Of Ampzilla "clattered" and "rang" when driven hard into low-resistance loads. In this case it occured into 2 ohms.

The testers were impressed by the h/k 330c (they ranked it as a best buy) which drove loads down to 1.3 ohms.
The report mentioned the h/k 330c out-classed the reference unit which was a Marantz 2275 driving a 2 ohm and 1.3 ohm loads. Below are the loads and output power of three units from the test report. They did not include the GAS Son Of Ampzilla in the data.

Load h/k 330c Marantz 2275 Marantz 2220B
8 ohms 24 W 78 W 28 W
4 ohms 42 W 127 W 33 W
3 ohms 48 W 120 W 21 W
2 ohms 44 W 41 W 9 W
1.3 ohms 40W 21 W 4.8 W

Would it be safe to run a 2270 at 2ohm?

I forgot to ask. Is there a need to drive a load or is this an open question to find what is out there.

I.E. do you have a 2 ohm load you need to drive, at what price?

My Forte 4A specs include this statement under "Current capability"

"16 amperes maximum continuous into 0.1 ohm"

which seems to imply an ability to drive 2-ohm loads.

Supposedly good, he was in the hospital but is back at it 100% as far as I know. They were at the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest last weekend and stole the show from what I hear...of course, paired with Salk speakers, it'd be hard not to!

I run my two Soundcraftsmen PA5001 amplifiers bridged mono driving my four ohm Thiel speakers with no problems (same load on the amplifier as driving a two ohm speaker in stereo). The amplifiers sound very musical and run nice and cool. :music:

2 ohm

any of the cheap proton amps. also altec 9440A into 2 ohms its like 3200 watts  of course it was 3k dollar amp in 1975 regards jim

Simaudio Celeste 4150SE

This beauty can drive just about anything without breaking a sweat and is an exceptionally musical amp. If you can get one buy it!!

I have heard it opined that the 2270 does not like loads lower than eight ohms, and have been specifically advised not to use speakers rated at 4 ohms with this receiver. I have not tested this, though I've been tempted to try my 2270 with my AR-3as or my early A/D/S 810s.

Given this body of opinion, I would be very cautious about running a two ohm load with the 2270. Others with greater technical expertise than I might be able to provide more information.

Dang, that is a gorgeous speaker. Makes me think of an acoustic guitar or whatnot...something-burst?

Sunburst I believe...check out the Salk website and click the 'galleries' tab...every speaker is custom made to order, and Jim Salk is master craftsman when it comes to wood...

As far as the 2270 is concerned do not use any overall load
under 4 ohms. Ideal impedance for this unit would be 8 ohm. Spec sheet is below.
