I guess I'll risk justifying that with an answer: Those cabinets got sold with the woofers to an AKer who, as far as I know, is enjoying them.

On a purely subjective note, I found the single 12" full range drivers in the C38 cabs disappointing and would call the AR-4x (warts and all) a better speaker on all fronts.

I'm going to keep and listen to the gear I enjoy. I think everybody should do the same: If somebody enjoys their stacked vintage speakers, I don't see any reason why they should be hounded into feeling inadequate. I've seen this conversation play out on AK in every stacking thread:

Stacker: "My stacked speakers sound pretty good."

Non-stacker: "From a technically informed standpoint, stacking is all wrong."

Stacker: "In my application, I think they sound better stacked than a single pair does."

Non-stacker: "You'd be better off in every way to just buy superior speakers."

That last bit seems a bit smug and sour to me. The scientific explanation that appeals so much to the empiracist in me butts up against my resistance to the idea that the "solution" always involves spending money and fulfilling the consumer impulse. I can accept that some people like stacked Advents or EPIs or anything better than a single pair and it doesn't lodge in my craw that they've got problems on paper. I'm chasing the music.

You've got the "More data" part down pat, mate, but sheesh...
 
D123 is "Extended Range," not full range, and I certainly appreciate how they were disappointing. That's the cheapest entry-level load JBL offered for C36.

However, if the D123s were replaced with 123As, and EconoWave cut into the baffle or stuck on top, they'd be the speakers NeedForSpeed heard here yesterday. Vintage JBL? Nope. JBL never made anything like that. Have we "destroyed" the speakers chasing the music, or merely offended the sensibilities of some who might hold certain intangibles in higher regard than the quality of sound they deliver?

Your AR2axs apparently have upgraded tweeters in them. Is my installing Tang Band or Morel tweeters, or horns and BMS drivers in AR4xs somehow heretical by comparision? Do I go "over the line" by also upgrading the woofers and crossovers and commit some crime against the AR legacy in doing so? I'm not destroying anything what wasn't already destined for the landfill here, and that's not just the speakers themselves.

Same with stacking. It's counterpoint. How hard is it to stick two pair of thrift store "finds" on top of one another and pretend we have achieved sonic nirvana? There are plenty here who will step up at any time and contend it is so, and that simple. It may be fun, but it's not that. I and others bring a different perspective to the discussion, is all, one founded in fact. There are options, very good ones, that actually ARE about the music. Stacking is about something else....

This is the most artistic use of stacked speakers I have seen! Also the most humerous, you must work in some 2344 butt cheek horn in that mix!
