Stanton 681EEE New Cartridge Equivalents

Over the years I think I owned every 681 starting with the 681 E and graduating with a 981. and Shures from a M7d to a V-15 MR V . I also had a bunch of Ortofons a few Signet/AT, Empires and a Pickering or too. When you work for a sound company you get to try everything eventually. I like the SP series B&O and a few MMC models. But out of them all Dynavectors have been my favorites. Even more than the Lyras, and Koetsu's I tried. I will say I have not tried Clear Audio. I guess I should mention Grace. The F9 E was a very special cartridge that I really liked, but as its no longer available its not for consideration.

That's the one I'm using on the 780Q. The NOS Stanton replacement runs about $325 and the Pickering replacement fits and works perfectly as the Pickering and Stanton bodies are the same, at least physically. I use an original Pickering brush as the JICO brush is far too stiff. This is the only pic I could find att. It does now, but like I mentioned, I had to file the end of the shank shorter or it rubbed on the cartridge body and would hang up when the stylus was pushed all the way in.

Doesn't the NOS styli run the risk of having a dried out and stiff suspension?

Both are MI, one two coil, one 4 coil. 680/681/Pickering XV 15 can use Stanton 600/Pickering Phase IV/Pickering Micro IV. Pickering XV 15 styli also fit Stanton 600/Pickering Micro IV/Pickering Phase IV.

I've used an XV-15 stylus in the "600/IV" body and it both fits and sounds terrific but the Stanton 680/681 stylus won't fit without some considerable trimming.

Might be tempted, then, to look for an NOS if I could find one that didn't cost an arm and a leg. Not sure it would be worth the difference in cost over the $56.00 Jico Pickering replacement thought, sound-wise.

Here's the patent covering the "600/IV". Though it is indeed a 2-coil design, it's nevertheless a tripole, not unlike many Azden/Piezo/Acutex cartridges. It's a very interesting cartridge.

The look reminds me of the Ortofon OM series. Still available on a lot of sites though, for quite a bit of cash. I guess the Stereohedron II tip is the main reason.

I’ve never had one of these, but most/all Japanese Stanton aftermarket styli appear to ride low because of a slight angle difference between theirs and the original angle. The tracking angle is right, but the angle of the grip is off, so you lose come clearance. But I don’t know if the Shibata follows this discrepancy or not.

Let me ask you this, before a I started this thread, I purchased a Russell brand elliptical stylus for my Stanton. Any thoughts as to how that compares with the Jico Pickering?

JICO's listing here is wrong, has been for years. The D2000Q is a stylus for for the UV-15/2000Q, a moving magnet cartridge, not for the moving iron XV-15.

[EDIT] Well, I got that wrong. the XSV is the moving magnet Pickering I was thinking of. The UV-15 is moving iron like the XV-15 but with much, much power inductance so using a UV stylus in an XV body would result in a major deficit in the top end. So it's still a bad match, though for different reasons and JICO's listing is still incorrect.

Gotta love vague or deceitful ebay listings. The stylus I ordered turned out to be the EVG 4822-DEE for a bit more money than I could have bought it from tVOM for. Oh well, such is life. I've heard it's not the best sounding stylus, but I'll give it a listen tonight.
