Struck Gold at the Thrift Store!

One of the 10" woofers in teh Fisher speakers has a rattle in it. The cone and surrounds look good. Is there any way to troubleshoot it?
 
The ON-OFF switch on the amp was stuck in the ON position. I removed the bottom cover and figured out it was stuck down. I managed to pop it up and now it seems to work ok. Is there some way to "Lube" this switch mechanism? Do they tend to get stuck like this? Will detox help?
 
don't send it to detox just yet-- do an intervention and give it the chance to change in outpatient therapy, and going to a lot of meetings, get a sponsor, that sort of thing. if it stilll stays stuck, then you might think about detox....

I think you should take notes of the things wrong with your new gear. Then do yourself a favor and get all the information you can on the web. There are many free sites that explain in detail, audio electronics. And don't rush into anything you're not sure of. That's the fastest way to failure.
 
I managed to unstick the power button on the amp. I've determined that the rattle I was hearing was due to a bad speaker, not the volume control on the pre-amp as I had feared. I hooked up my cd player and another pair of speakers and it sounds very clean. In fact, with this kind of power, I'm afraid to turn it up too much! I need some big speakers to go with this. I'll keep my eyes open for the perfect match. I'm sorry I sold those JBL Lancers that I found last month. They would have been perfect. If someone out there was really interesting in owning this M-2, C-2a Amp and Preamp, we might could cut a deal. Its way more powerful than I can use here at the house.
 
If I listed the components on ebay, I would pair the M-2 and the C-2a for $500 and see where the bidding went from there. Of course Feebay and Paypal would take a chunk of it.
 
Always a good idea not to reveal the amounts PAID, if you have every intention of selling here (or there).

Do the right thing and offer it to the Yamaha freaks on this website (of which I am NOT one) before you go doing that ebay gig.
 
I'm beginning hate feebay myself. I would love to see this setup go to an AK member. One of you can buy the entire stack for $599 plus packing and shipping. Any takers?? I'll list it in the classifieds if someone here wants it. I'm also willing to break it up, but I'd like to see the M-2 and the C-2a stay together at least. I've got this coming week to deal with it, then I'll be out of town for a week.

I've found that starting high generally means no bids. Start low and set your reserve at $500. Which is about the most you will get, IMHO. My guess is that you will do better selling separately and that you should wait until October when vacations are over and folks are starting to up-grade their systems for the winter indoor season.

But, if you think they are 'too powerful' for your place, you are wrong. Power doesn't make speakers sound better because they can make them play louder (which they certainly can do), but makes them sound better as that power, especially with a fast amp/flat responding system like the C-2a/M-2 pair, handles dynamics so much better. Hook them up in your main listening rig for a bit and listen.
 
I second that. Hang onto that rig for awhile, especially if you find some good high-end speakers...many "audiophile" speakers, even the standmount monitors, tend to be somewhat inefficient and benefit from having a good 150-300 a side on tap available, even at normal listening levels. Also, down the road you may end up in a bigger place, and you'll want more power on tap. For what you paid, it's best to hang onto that setup...you'll kick yourself for selling it if you let it go. :yes:

I see them up on ebay already... I was going to chime in about how selling the cassette and tuner would pay for the rest... but oh well.. might be pressing bills to pay, we just don't know.
 
Oh, give me a break guys. I have a decent sytem already for my needs. I just got through wiring up a vintage Marantz system I found to a 4-speaker setup that includes my screen porch. There is no place in my house for this monster system and the rack and the monster speakers it needs. My kids are still young and the playroom (which will be mine one day) always looks like a lego bomb just went off. My wife is already griping about the amount of audio stuff I'm accumulating in the garage. I know this is a boss system. I know it would sound great hooked up to a couple of giant speakers parked on either side of a 52 inch plasma TV. If I had the time and opportunity to set that up I would do it in a heartbeat. My wife and I both work full time. We have lots of after-hours activities with the kids and very little time to pursue our own interests. If you don't think I appreciate this stuff you're wrong. I just am not in a position to pursue the hobby and I don't have the room. It is better that this system goes to someone who will love it than to sit in my garage gathering dust in the hope that one day I'll use it. I'll bank the funds and one day I'll assemble a really nice system when I can afford to do so. Let's have fun and see how much it sells for. BTW, no AK folks have emailed me regarding this sytem despite my offer. On a related note: I can't seem to fix the rattle in the Fisher XP-7s. If someone wants those for FREE, drop me an email and we'll work out the packing and shipping costs.
 
It would have been nice if you had given this place a chance. You stated that if someone here indicated they wanted it, you'd list it in the classifieds. ?????? If someone indicated they wanted it, there wouldn't be a need to list it in the classifieds would there?

I'm not going to do the math, but you had this thing on here for all of about 24 hours or so before you decided to go ebay. Over a weekend to boot, when a helluva lot of members are probably out with their families and stuff. I'd be surprised if some of the folks that really would've considered buying it, ever even got a chance to see your posts before it went to ebay.

That's all. Nothing more, nothing less.
