My son is looking for a set of headphones. He would like noise canceling and to keep the budget within $300. I know next to nothing about headphones so I’m hoping y’all can lay some recommendations on me. Thanks grumpy.

These are supposed to be amazing. Go for about $249. Get the 350 ohm version as they have Beryllium drivers.

Second the recommendation on the Sonys. I have the XM3s and at the time they were purchased, they were the best BT phones available. Based on reviews, they appear to have kept up. From what I've read here and elsewhere, the Focal Bathys are better but they are about double your son's budget.

Can't see where these are noise cancelling, which is one of Grumpy's requirements.

I had Sennheiser Momentums for a while and returned them. To much mid bass and false highs. But Other Sennheiser and the B&W are good choices. There are always great deals out there right after Christmas.

the bargain of the year is Fiio FT-1s at $150. comfortable and light, the low end gets down to 30Hz which is what I was looking for. they punch WAY above their weight class. also a bargain are the Audeze Maxwells which are closed-back planar blue tooth gaming headphones that I do not use for gaming (I don't game). sound quality is also excellent, going down lower than the Fiios by a little and with good authority. the YT reviews have been way positive for both of these sets and by trustworthy reviewers too.

NC does nothing to enhance the sound other than in noisy environments like airliners etc. years ago, I got a $100 pair of Audiotechnica headphones that are great for flying but otherwise, I don't use them.

With apologies for going over the stated budget, the Sennheiser HD650's are pretty well regarded. I work with two people who have them and use them daily and both rave about them.

EDIT: ...and then I noticed the need for noise cancelling. Oops!

although they aren't NC, i have the Audeze Maxwells that are VERY isolating and are BT with excellent sound for ~300 bucks.

Shout out for the AKG K361 'phones. A tremendous value, usually under a hundred. K371 is fine too, but you pay a bit more.

You can use Equalizer APO to fine tune them just a bit and they are even better...
