Super Heresy - Where to Find Information: Part Due or Is This a Super Heresy Heresy?

Back in Julty2024 I put up the following post on the Super Heresy and got some great feedback:

Many thanks to all who helped me out!

So after doing all the mods mentioned in my previous post (including installing the SMAHL and Celestion drivers and new caps) I decided to leave well enough alone. Don't get me wrong, I am very happy with the modification and would not think of converting my Heresys back to their original condition. However, I have not made a new back plate with the ports as I am not really a big fan of ported designs and like the sound of acoustic suspension bass drivers better. Because of this, and because I have a stereo pair of SVS PO 1000 subs doing the heavy lifting at the bottom, I've decided to try a different route. The Heresy cabinets really aren't an acoustic suspension design but I have thought of trying to seal them up with some closed cell weather stripping and getting them there. So my question is basic; would this constitute a Super Heresy heresy? Or for that matter, just a heresy unto itself? Thanks.

PS - I also added damping material pulled from a scrapped set of Boston Acoustics A 150s years ago and, to my ear, it appeared to have a positive and not negative affect on the sound quality of the Heresys.

You may need to dope the accordion surrounds, as they may be somewhat porous and not seal adequately. Also, their T/S Parameters are sub optimal for sealed/acoustic suspension alignment. There was a guy who did a pair a few years back, I think he used Eminence Deltalite woofers. Our favorite curmudgeonly narcissist did a simulation, gave them his seal of approval and named them Super Heresy 3.0.

That's interesting. So the SH 3.0 is a sealed cabinet design? I'll have to check into that. Thanks

I did a little looking. So is the Celestion driver not the best choice for a sealed cabinet?

From the thread:

I am not looking to mod a H3 into a SH2 myself. I was wondering how well... or not well... the results were from miss matching drivers and networks. My initial guess is the results would not be great. Was wondering what OP had to say about actual results.
in this case, "3.0" refers to the 3rd version of the super H: 1.0 features a sMAHL, Emminence Delta Pro 12A and a port; 1.5 features the the aformentioned, but a K701 and K53 mid, with adjustments to the network to accommodate. the 2.0 takes the 1.0 and uses a Emminence Kappalite woofer in a bass reflex alignment. finally, the 3.0 takes the the sMAHL from the other versions, uses a Deltalite and a sealed cabinet. All of the versions use an E-1 network. one could take a later version, either II or III and make them bass reflex, but they would need a network that suits their drivers.

The Celestion is probably better than the Eminence Delta Pro 12A- its QTS is right between the Deltalite and Delta Pro, which was the original, ported SH selection and roughly equivalent to the Pro version (iirc), if not identical. The Deltalite's lower Qts, FS and frequency range make it a better choice for a sealed alignment, but looking at the T/S parameters, the Celestion TF1225, seems like it could be the mama bear selection for either alignment.

Many thanks, but I have to ask if the Celestion TF1225 is the mama bear for the 3.0, what would be the papa bear from the list of woofers for the 2.0?

• Kappalite 3012 HO
• LaVoce WAN123.00
• B&C 12PLB76
• Klipsch K-42
• Eminence Delta Pro 12A (reportedly the same as a K-42)
• Kappa Pro-12A
• Eminence Kappa 12A
• Celestion TF 1225
• Dayton PA310-8 (although some report that it needs a Zobel to control the rising impedance and a smaller inductor for a 1st order)

You mentioned a Deltalite woofer. Is it this one from the Parts Express catalog? I don't see it on the above list.

Many thanks again!

Super Heresy 3.0!
Thanks. In addition to mis spelling deux in the title of my post I came to the realization that I reinvented the 3.0 in my post. Or to put it more accurately, as a co-worker of mine would have put it. I reinflated the tire with the Super Heresy 3.0. Oh well, one finds out about audio and all things in life by asking questions. Thanks for your help and patience with my post.

The TF1225 surround is sealed, no dope required.

Ported and sealed performance of the 1225 below. With boundary gain, the low-end on the Heresy sounds much better than the alignment would suggest. Even if using a subwoofer, the 1225 ported sounds excellent. Most people have not heard a good alignment of a ported enclosure design which is why it is viewed so unfavorably.

I ran all these thru the "sim" for sealed and they are all very similar to the 1225 sealed enclosure posted.

Thanks much for doing that! So when comparing one driver to another on the list its literally "six of one and a half-dozen of the other"?

The DeltaLite ll 2512 works best in a sealed enclosure compared to all the others, but whether it is worth the extra money is the question. I would try the ported enclosure with the 1225. It's not difficult to do and if you don't like it, go back to sealed. Make a new back panel and save the original.

Ironically, the K-22 works the best in a sealed enclosure compared to all of them, but its sound quality is below par.
