SX-1980... sold for over five grand!....

just being a skeptic: what if some guys want to influence the market optically by selling to somebody they know, the deal is officially done and privately the deal is undone afterwards? There are 'price resources' looking at done bay prices..

I'd say it's possible but it's not likely that he's got a warehouse full of 9090s and 1980s that he's trying to fire the market up on.
Probably it was a bidding war and the last guys said to hell with it and put in hail Mary bids just to nuke it for everyone else. That's not to say that they won't get big dollars for this when it does finally sell but probably not $5k worth.

And to everyone saying they are buying nostalgia and not SQ, of course that's what they are doing. There is nothing like the 70's monster receivers. Like was said above, it's a light show full of knobs and dials and is just an awesome piece of equipment (in the literal definition of the word) to have as the center piece in your living room.
It's the same thing with people buying muscle cars. Look at the specs for a Mach 1 Mustang and then look at the specs for a V6 Camry. Your grandma can spank you if she catches you off the line in her rolling appliance. Doesn't matter though. It's not as cool as the Mustang and no one is going to give you **** for spending a pile of money to get the cool car (except maybe your wife but none of my business).

People pay for cool and, this is said as a total separates guy, big receivers are cool. Always were and always will be.

Makes no sense. Value fees are expensive on five grand.

The high price of these always look fishy. One guess is that someone use fake sale to inflate the price. Even if they cancelled that sale afterwards, you wont know.

eBay has what's called up to and no more than. In other words , you pay 10% till a price is reached. In cameras it was $1500 and the final value fee would max out and anything above was yours. Paypal would still get their 3% on the total of the transaction.

Well if the transaction was not compleated it will not be in eBay compleated listings.

Positive feedback is very poor indicator of sales.
If one sell 100 items, he'll be lucky to get 10-20 feedbacks.

I remember many years ago I asked buyer if he received my item, if he likes it, maybe post a feedback.
I got email that he loves it, everything is great, and he really appreciates my service.
However, he never bother to post an official feedback on eBay.

The only indicator is to see the unit was re-listed by the same seller.

In the appraisal world a sale like the $14,000.00 Sansui is called an outlyer and not used to put value on similar items.

With this sale being a one bid buy-it-now sale I would ignore it as nothing more than someone with too much money and a raging chubby for a G-33000.

Ha! Look at that. I didn't remember it being in Montreal before, but I didn't look that closely. Too many boat payments.
