SX 1980 with box...how high will it go?

Yeah, wow! That is a immaculate unit, and in that state, it will go high, that's for sure.

I've seen one in orig box, immaculate like that go for $4000.
 
He also listed several Series 20 pieces, and with original boxes. Serious collector, and quality stuff commands high dollars...

I wouldn't take that bet. I might even raise it! At its current price of $2,900 (as of this posting) it's just crazy expensive. Forget about alternatives you could buy for that scratch. This is a vintage piece that hasn't even been recapped or serviced! I can't take at face value the seller's claim about the previous owner having it upgraded by Pioneer. No documentation means to me it didn't happen. And what kinds of upgrades would Pioneer have done?

I am certainly not discouraging anyone who wants it from getting it. To be sure, similarly rare and rarer TOTL receivers go for similarly high prices (e.g. G-22000/33000, Technics SA-1000, Marantz 2500/2600). But honestly, I think that some of the attraction of this particular unit is the ad. What stands out is that massive rack of Silver Spec gear in the background; that is no accident. The subliminal association is powerful.
 
There is a Technics SA-1000 in great shape on the bay now for a bin of $1200. No bids yet with a little over a day left.
 
The presentation of this unit is marginal at best. For that kind of coin, I'd want to see a slew of hi-res closeups detailing every square inch of the thing. I've seen stuff look better than this in a listing only to arrive at my door with a host of disappointments- that's when the seller falls back on the same old line- "What'd ya expect? It's 30 years old." In my book, mint is mint whether something's 30 or 300 years old. Note the seller stops short of declaring it "mint" - so there's his exit. Some people take way too much for granted. Just my 2 cents.

If the owner is an AK'er (very likely), he needs to photo document every square inch of the receiver including serial number, any identifying marks, AND the shipping package itself. That is a very nice unit that many good people and a few scumbags would want...badly.
 
I wonder if that is the same one that was being sold around here, with box, about 8 mos ago for $1500?
