I'm looking to have an FM alignment done on my Pioneer SX-750 in the Chattanooga area. I've been quoted $120 from a local hi-fi shop, is this a good price,it seems rather expensive to me.

DIY AM/FM Tuner Alignment

With steady hands and half-decent eyesight you can do this. You will also need 1.5mm (1/16") and 2mm (5/64") precision screwdrivers and 2mm allen wrench for many tuning pots and ferrite cores. Round off the bottom points on the hex wrench to help get into tight cores. The SX-750 has a signal strength meter (SSM) which will be your guide. I tuned AM and FM on two Sansui's (a 9090 and 9090DB) yesterday to my great satisfaction so I know this works at least for those tuners. Find a strong station towards the low end for either band for which you know the correct station number (eg, 92.3FM) and remember what you're listening to. For low FM SX-750 manual says the dial calibration is done with T4 core. Place a tool on T4. If tool placement knocks out the station, you will have to use a rubber glove or wrap the handle with a few turns of electrical tape or find your pop's old plastic tuning tools (which I JUST CD NOT find yest). Turn your dial wheel a smidgeon towards the correct station number on the dial glass and then ever so slightly turn T4 either way to bring the station back into tune. Now you know which way you have to turn T4 to zero in your dial pointer for the low FM. Zero in T4 as much as possible using the SSM as a guide. Repeat this process on a strong known station at the high FM end using TC6. Also use SSM to tune the core in your antenna. Repeat similarly for AM. See your specs for add'l tuning for distortion, selectivity, FM stereo light and MPX.

Find the service manual and look at the tuner alignment section. If your tech is going to align that way, $120 is about right. If he is simply aligning the dial pointer to the station, that can be done at home and is not worth the $120. Ask.

My local tech whom I respect greatly says an FM tuner alignment takes him about an hour and his rate is $75/hour. However, there may be more disassembly involved for this receiver. it can't hurt to call around; you might be able to find a better price.

I may just align it myself then, thankfully it's a spare receiver at this point so I can risk doing it myself.I might still call the hifi place and see what their alignment includes out of curiosity.
