I used to have a SX-9000 that had a pretty warm sound to it, like tube audio. I was interested in picking up a SX-828 for $60.00. Anyone listen to this receiver have any yeah's or neah's?
I got to rebuild another system.

It's a very nice sounding receiver. Definetly has a warm sound. The sound is kind of a cross between tubes and SS. $60.00 for a working SX-828 is a smokin deal in my opinion.

Thank's elgato8905', I kinda wondered if if sounded like you said, between tubes and SS. I also sold my SA-9100 & TX-9100 and can kick myself. I was allway's part to the seperate's.

I just sold my SX-727 and my PL-570 turntable (mint with the original box...:tears:) last weekend at my garage sale because I never used them. I'm much more partial to the SX-1050 that I have. I also have a SA-9500II paired up with a CT-F 1000 cassette deck and a SX-980 Paired up with a CT-F 9191. I'm glad I sold the PL-570 and the SX-737 to someone who would use them. Plus they made me one hell of an offer for them. An offer I couldn't refuse:D.

I know what ya mean about having extra gear sitting around not being used. Gear my-as well go to someone that will take care of it and enjoy. I just did away with to much, and now need a power managment. I think i'll go back to a receiver and give this SX-828 a home.
I hope it's still there.

The SX-828 is a fine sounding machine.

The number-one thing to deal with is the small blue Sanyo capacitors that are used widely in the set. These leak and cause horrible symptoms. At the very least, these should be replaced on the main preamp board with good-quality Nichicons, Panasonics or Xicons.

The power supply board also needs a good going over. Pay special attention to aging solder connections. It is often useful to replace all caps on that board under 1000uF.

Great sounding receiver. This was the unit that got me hooked on hi-fi, in '74 I think, at a friend's house. They had a 828 driving large advents in a rather large living room and it sounded incredible.

I use one out I the garage and like it alot. It went in as a backup one day ane wound up keeping the starters job.
It was TOTL in its day.
BTW, thanks for the tips on those caps Fred!

I bought one when they were new for $469. What would that be today? I think those and the SX-1010 sound as good as anything since.

Okay, here are two pic's I got through email on the this SX-828. One of the output speaker terminals is missing. This guy says he had something rebuild in it, but can't remember what. I mentioned power supply board, and he said 'YES' that sounded like it. So I'm going to pick it up this weekend.

Work him....

See if you can talk him down a little on the broken connector. Shouldn't be much of a problem to get functional, although the proprietary speaker plug might be difficult to find. I'd just replace it with a set of conventional binding posts, and then not have to worry about having your speaker wires fall out, or spending a bunch of $$ to buy the plugs from Pioneer.

I was listening to my SX-828 last night through a set of KLH 20's. It always amazes me how good that combo sounds......:thmbsp:

I have a number of TOTL Pioneer (1250, 828, 1010) and I always seem to come back to the 828.....

The Pioneer SX-828 was my very first purchase/entry into this hobby back in 1973. I shelled out $300 for this receiver which listed for six hundred. I still have it and it still performs wonderfully with a very nice sounding FM AND a built-in Moving Coil step up transformer. A steal at 60.

Still in the house!

Purchased mine in 1972 while a college student....still have it...in the closet as my mcIntosh 1900 guards the bedroom system.

I love the 828.....and will hold it till my wife yells that I clean house!

I have an 828 that drives my JBL outdoor speakers around the pool (mostly). I love it. Very pure and warm.

I paid like $65 for it a few years ago.

The 828 sounds dandy! Then again, I'm partial to the early 70s Pioneers.

$60 is reasonable, at least here in the Houston area. All due respect to Analog Addict, but I wouldn't change out the speaker connectors. You can use male spade connectors in lieu of the proprietary plugs, there's a thread somewhere that specifies which one is positive. Or, if you really want the plugs, I'd go with vintage-electronics.cc...Bob lists these on his site at a better price than most sources. BTW, Pioneer still sells the plugs, but the price they list is EACH.

Au contrair!...

Don't get me wrong, I'm the last one to put in extra work if unnecessary. However, the missing jack needs some sort of replacement, for which conventional jacks would just make life easier....:thmbsp: I'd just live with the other ones....:thumbsdn:

It would be necessary to create some sort of plate or plug for the gaping hole....:D

My apologies, AA...I didn't look at the large version of that pic. If ya gotta fix it anyway, binding posts are certainly easier to find.

I'd also seriously haggle over that hole.

Here's a picture of the speaker jacks I replaced on my SX-727.

I had an 828 from the 70's until the late 80's when I cooked the outputs. At the time the price quoted to fix it bought me a used SX-1250 so I let the shop keep the 828. It was a great sounding reciever at the time and was my first decent piece of equipment. And it seemed much more powerful than the rated output (50 or 70wpc?) - at least compared to other similarly rated recievers I tried. I really liked the color scheme better than the x50 and x80 series.
