Taking on the big dog - Recapping my new SX-1980

I have great admiration for those of you who can just jump in and do this type of work (even greater envy). Go learn you say..........you can't teach a really old dog new tricks.

Just a ballpark figure what would the work you've done cost if you had to farm it out.......if you could find a shop that can do it?

There's a guy on ebay that does a similar refurb for $680 plus shipping both ways. He checks the resistors and transistors but doesn't do the tuner recap for that price.

At the point you're at, I'm barely working the kinks out....
I just weighed a bag of parts that came out of a recent, full on 1980, and it came out to 11.6 ounces. That was every electrolytic except the 4 big ones... and yes, I did the tuner, apc circuit too.

The switches are dirty and sometimes "stereo mode" functions on one side only due to dust. (i think?...I hope!)
So i switch to mono and both speakers sing. It comes back by itself to setreo mode...

I just really need to have the monster clean properly and I'm going to do it myself. :thmbsp:

Other than that, I'm not going to do anything than change the Tuning knob for a newer one and get the missing Tone control knob, and it'll look like new!

I still can't believe I found this here!....:banana: What a machine!...:music:

The allen wrench that I used to remove the set screws in a SA9500 doesn't fit the set screws in an SX 1250 I'm cleaning up.
 
I just picked up a sx-1980. Do you work on these? It works flawlessly, but was wondering what I should do to bring it up to snuff.

Today, the tubes are not being used, but the 1980 is. Makes me want to open her up and have a peek inside. But sounding the way it sounds, I think I'll put it off a lil bit longer :)
 
Mine was working great also but sometimes it takes a year or so on the wait list for the great techs.. So when you decide to do it you might have to wait. If your gonna have it done consider this.
