Teac A-640 needs belts.

Flat belts should be .020" to .025" -- no thicker -- and should stretch about 5% between relaxed and "in place."

Many online sources for belts are owned by people who haven't taken the time to study tape transport design, and they will sell you belts which are thicker and tighter. These will damage bearings and degrade the machine's wow-and-flutter figure.

Thanks Fred, I will look for something that size, I am still taking the unit apart. It is very well built.

UPDATE: Have the front off and drive out, the belt turned to goo!

Happy New year !

Teac still sells belts for nearly all their old units.

Thanks EchoWars, I did not know that, I have a few RTR's that need new ones. Do they still have the VU meters available? one on this deck is not working, I could not tell because of the main belt being gook up. Got new belts from Vintage Electronic Sales.

Thanks,
John.
Happy New Year To Ya.

Teac carries a lot of old parts, but of course, the older it is, the less likely they'll have it. Worth a shot.
