Teac a-640

Picked up a TEAC A-640 off of CL for $10. Not quite as good as the TEAC Z-5000, but still a nice "little" deck. A little deck that weighs a ton!

When you replace the drive belt, be damn sure you use a proper length replacement and be prepared to replace the servo controlled motor. The bearings after all these years will not take much (if any) abuse.

My A-640 (original owner, c.1973) is fully functional and works great, has a burnt-out light bulb on one VU meter. Has anyone on here ever replaced that? Replacement source? Spec? (Unfortunately, I no longer have the user manual or service booklet. Probably lost in one of my moves across either the Pacific or Atlantic.)
Mine does have the wood cabinet, and it adds a really nice touch - and more weight. Those pix up above look great! Thanks for posting. Mine is camera-shy until I get that VU meter illuminated.

I have worked on a few of those in my days at Teac. It was a solid unit. Like all pigtail meter lamps the voltage should be 8 V lamps as the 6.3 V fed to them is done that ways so they have a real long life.
This web site will get you the right lamp. The model you want is L24.
You need to stay at 100mA or less. I have also used the L19 lamps as well.

Good machines are suppose to be heavy as the light ones are nothing but plastic garbage. So if you have one that has some weight you better hold onto it.

Thanks, Sam. That site is a great resource.
Lamps ordered and on the way, including extras for future. And I figured if replacing one, it would be prudent to replace both, since they have the same 'birthdays', and the other one's days are probably just about up, too.

I'll allways replace both lamps - a deck with different light in the meters do look a bit goofy :)

Replacing of lamps is just the start of the needed maintenance. Flywheels need to be oiled and front motor bearings could use some too. Motors for these things seemed to all but disappear but then I found some that will work and the are pretty much plug and play- you do need to adjust any new motor installed.
Cleaning Idler tires with Naphtha as well as pinch Roller- give it a good scrubbing with Naphtha. I bet these unit can keep on going a lot more years.
The new motors I have are called EG530AD-2B
I have already put them in some units and they work great.

My A-640

My A-640 (original owner, c.1973) is fully functional and works great...

Addendum: For various reasons, mostly rubber-related, it's now out of commission. :tears:

Local audio hospital says they can't get the needed parts. Can someone recommend any cassette repair service, any where in US, that might be able to tackle this deck. It's just too good to go on the scrap heap.

Try Terry's rubber rollers or there are a lot of members on here that would be able to do it. Also, there's the vintage-electronics.cc guy that could probably do it. I don't have any experience with his work, but the belts he has are great.

Also, I don't know if you saw or not, but I have a service manual for it that you can have.

Not to resurrect an old thread, but I have a Teac A-640 that plays super quiet and I haven't been able to locate a service manual for it. Is this one still up for grabs or does anyone know where else I could find one?
