Don, when you have the faceplate off, look at the right solenoid, it has a black rubber washer close to the base, sometimes this washer melts all over the shaft and prevent the solenoid to engage.
If this is the case, clean off the black tar with head-cleaner and try again.

I don't have a picture of X-10 apart but look on the solenoid here showing the black washer.

This is a Tascam 32 but they have the same solenoid.

Thanks Vintage. You are the nicest guy I've known in my Internet life. Today I tried to remove the front panel and almost done except one little screw got its head worn out. I probably will need to look at this next month as my trip to Asia is coming up. I know what to do now and hopefully it is ok. Many thanks....
