Technics 1210GR - Too Much Turntable?

I’m looking to upgrade my turntable. Is a Technics 1210GR too much TT for my system? Meaning, will it be dragged down by my other components, or would I be better with the lesser SL1200 mk7? If I went with the GR, what other component should I upgrade soonest to match the level of performance of the GR?

Current system: TT: Audiotechnica LP-120 / Cart: Nagoaka MP110 / Phono: Project Tube Box DS / Amp: Audiolab 6000a integrated / Speakers: Elac Debut 2.0 b6.2 + sub

I will say... going out on a limb , you'll probably not hear a difference between the GR/MK7 in your system

BTW-- nice system
 
Nothing new here and maybe is rote... Find the better (more $$$) speaker sound/design you love. May have to audition many speakers with highend components... then later upgrade downstream to get 'that sound' from your new speakers

Or... just enjoy the music with what you have (yeah right) :rolleyes:

I view system upgrades as a game of 'leap frog'.

For a given point in time, my system will be made up of various components, each with their own price point and commensurate performance.

When I upgrade, it is usually one component at a time, since I don't have unlimited funds. The upgraded component will be a step up, and might be a little ahead of the others.

If the OP is content with the rest of the components and plans never to upgrade them, I'd agree with others - go with the mk7.

If this is an ever evolving system, I'd go with the GR. imho.
 
I bought a new Technics SL 1210M5 back in 2004. It was definitely more TT than the audio rig I had at the time. No regrets about that. Sound I'm getting today is in another league from what I had back then.

Turntable is a good long term purchase/investment IMHO. The old school technology ages well .. compared to other stereo components that become outdated over time.

I’d buy it. I think you could definitely hear a difference given your other components. I would be very surprised if you did not. And, as pointed out you can improve those later. Your other components are pretty darn capable.
 
If you go by my British hifi mags from the 1980’s, spend 99.9% of your hifi budget on your turntable, and get your speakers from your neighbor’s garbage can. After all, “garbage in = garbage out.“

Realistically, though, a great turntable will serve you well if/when you decide to upgrade other components of your system.

The G and the GR are amazing turntables for sure get the GR over the mk7 it will last you forever.

I think you'd be amazed at how much better a new Technics will sound compared to the AT-120. It's in a completely different league, and you'll certainly notice the difference.
 
You always want the best platform to reproduce your lp sound. If you are concerned about the investment you can start out with more economical cartridge. The 1210 will allow to advance many steps up the ladder. It should give you many years of excellent performance. There are a lot of tables out there that can't match its performance at twice to 3 times the price. So go for it. AT just isn't in the same class of performance. The arms have been improved over the earlier original 1200 model tables also.
