Technics SL-10. Hookup issues

Sounds like a couple differing thoughts. I suppose if I try the SL10 MC setting and go to the switch box, the worst thing that will happen is hum?

Sorry, but no, it isn't - that's an active gain stage (with disctrete transistors), not a SUT. Check the schematic in the service manual for verificationn, in case you wouldn't believe me.

There might be hum. But foremost there would be insufficient gain and missing RIAA (re-)equalisation, if you don't hook either an MM phono stage (the with integrated MC pre-pre of the SL-10 activated) or an MC phono stage (then with the integrated MC pre-pre of the SL-10 bypassed) in between - so the output level would be very low and the highs would be overemphasized, which the bass would be underrepresented.

The MC setting on the SL-10 will bring up the level of a low output MC cart to the level of an MM cart. Then you connect it to a phono stage that does two things: 1. deliver gain, 2: implement the RIAA equalization.

If you mount an MM cart and use the MC pre-preamp in the SL-10 (by selecting the MC setting) you will be getting some gain - but not enough - and no RIAA equalization. It won't work.

Regardless of what type of cart you use on the SL10, you will need to connect it to the phono input of an amplifier / preamplifier.

Yes it will. Turntable to Vincent, Vincent to source switch, source switch to Woo audio amplifier. You can engage the SL10 MC amplifier and run the Vincent in MM mode, or use the SL10 without the pre-preamplifier on and use the Vincent's MC setting.

The Vincent should go before the switcher in either case. Ground wire to the Vincent if it reduces hum, or not attached at all if quieter that way.

In MM mode the built-in pre-pre is bypassed.
 
Hooked it up trying montycats suggestions and have hum in all scenarios. Have also tried various cables to no avail. Also tried a MM cartridge and get hum. Ground is good to the Vincent.

Did you try without the source switcher? Table to Vincent to Woo?

You could also try moving the ground wire to either the switcher or the Woo. If there is no ground post (as I expect is the case) put the wire under any screw on the cabinet so it touches the metal cabinet.
