Technics SL 1600

I just bought a near pristine 1600 turntable. The seller shipped it with the platter removed, as I requested, but shipped it at the bottom of the box with the platter and a 2 boxes of lps ontop of the cover! cracked cover big time! I neede a new cover. I know a 1200 MkII cover will fit a 1600MKII, but will it fit the original 1600? Thats all I've been able to find so far..help! The seller has offered 20 bucks to refund back. Not too good a deal for a 150 dollar purchase.TIA,richard

A new cover will cost $38 (and maybe an extra $15 for shipping) but you'll also need new hinges I'm thinking.

If your dust cover hinges are single screw (plastic part) then you'll need the twin screw (plastic part) hinges, so factor in around $30 for those.

I just found one for 19.99 from Union Electronics (Panasonic p/n SFAD170-01E) It's not a stocked item, but will be available the 28th for shipping. I have never dealt with them before, but seem to carry alot of parts : http://www.ued.net/website/catalog.html

Thanks for the info. I'll let you know if its too good to be true! I still don't know the shipping rate, but its got to be better than what I just got!

I had a similar case with an SL-1510 that the seller packed with the dustcover attached to the TT resulting in a couple of breaks at the hinges.

I didn't accept a refund but insisted on a replacement dustcover shipped to me at the seller's cost. I received that about 3 weeks later.

You were very lucky, a lot of sellers probably wouldn't have done that.

I bought a pair of 1200 dust covers off eBay several years back. One is on my 1700Mk2 and the other is on my brother's 1600; they are the right dimensions in width and depth to fit both turntables, but are not as tall as the originals. I'm not certain, but I think the 1600 and 1700Mk2 had two-screw hinges that fit the 1200 dust covers.

Originals had 2 screw hinge assemblies a la original 1200. Mk II covers not as tall as originals and hinge system is different. Ran into the same issue with my SL-1600 (backup to my SL-1200 Mk II). Has anyone switched their hinges to SL-1200 Mk II or 5 ones? If so, please post pictures.

I've swapped hinges, but my original SL-1300 or 1700 originally had one screw for the plastic lid securing, while the other had two.

Also, the hinge screw holes on the rear of the TTs varies in height- sometimes you need to elongate the mounting holes on the hinges to get the best fit.

I know this from experience.

Good info guys, thanks! The cover thats cracked has the single screw, single slotted mount/ brackets. I'm hoping the one I ordered truly is the correct replacement as I prefer the adjustability of this design. This truly is one nice turntable. I recently retired and now have re-discovered my youth on vinyl! I guess I bought my last record around '87 and started filling up a Sony 200 disc CD changer. It is now full and temporarily parked!lol Vinyl rules! Thanks again.

If it's a 1200 table, you'll need to add new hinges.

KABusa sells them, as I imagine any dj shop stocking Technics parts.

They will fit but may require subtle modification to the screw holes of the hinges that mount to the body.

Help!

How did this situation get resolved????

Strangely enough, I find myself in the EXACT same situation (except that my turntable is not pristine).

The seller is going to file an insurance claim, I guess.

I'd appreciate it if somebody could tell me where one can buy one of these dustcovers.

Technics SL-1200 Mk II or Mk 5/5d dustcovers and hinges can be had from any Panasonic Parts distributor or Panasonic Parts themselves. Cost around $60 for both items. Easily had from several sources. Can be ordered online too if you like!

Well, it hasn't yet. UE cannot get the cover, NLA. More research finds that Encompass Distributing can get it, alledgedly. Will know in 3-6 days The seller is now squirming a little, says if its over 20.00, he wants the tt back and will refund all shipping charges in full. I may take him up on it. Just a hassle to pack and go to the PO. If ED gets the cover, I'll take the 20 from the seller and pay the shipping for the new cover myself. This TT will sit atop of my hi-fi rack instyle!
You know, I only wanted a decent plastic waffle spinner. This has got to be my worst Ebay experience..EVER!:thumbsdn:

Ok......thanks.

Now......are you looking for the exact same cover and hinge as I am? I guess my picture should tell you.

If you find that they are available I guess I'll want one.

Keep me informed, please, if you would. I sure hope you find a good source.

My seller hasn't offered to take the whole works back, but I'd have to completely repack it (his packing was not close to satisfactory) and even if he paid me extra it would be a big pain, so I'd rather he just give me a partial refund and I buy the cover.

The turntable is in pretty good condition and seems to work OK, although far from being pristine as you say yours is.

P.S. The way e-Bay is now set up, you can lay negative feedback on the guy and he can't neg you back.

He has every reason to make you a satisfied customer. It WAS his mistake, after all.

If he gets nasty, you can always try for a credit card chargeback and offer to ship it back to him when he sends you the money to have it professionally packed by somebody else. Tell him you'll charge him a dollar a day storage while he makes up his mind.

Frankly, I wouldn't want to pack a turntable myself. Too many things can go wrong.

I think I'll give this seller NEGATIVE FEEDBACK anyway out of principle- just for being an IDIOT in his packing process and actually thinking it was ok! It's like putting a bowling ball on your front seat doing 90mph, and slamming on the brakes...DUMB A**!

Yeah, they don't seem to realize that their mistake (laziness?) results in us wasting a huge amount of our own precious time getting all this figured out.

I'd go slow on giving neg feedback, though......it can really hurt a seller and if he takes responsibility and makes things right......I'd have mercy on him.

Those poor e-Bay sellers are not doing real well these days.

I had the same thing happen with my 1600, where the seller refused to pack the TT per instructions. The platter was duct taped to the base as was the tonearm and he left the counter balance on the arm and the cover taped to the base. Of course the weight came loose in shipment and put nicks in it and the cover got cracked across the hinge. I immediately got a hold of him and told him the results of his not following directions and that it would cost me around $80 for a new cover. More than what I had payed for the TT. He came back and refunded me 1/2 the cost of the TT to avoid going thru the litigation process. I haven't picked up a new cover yet but you could check this out: http://stores.ebay.com/proaudioexpress_TURNTABLE-DUST-COVERS-TECHNICS_W0QQfsubZ3739846QQfrsrcZ1. If you go thu the e-bay link here on AK, e-bay makes a donation to AK. There's a thread that addresses what covers will fit but I've lost my link to it. I believe the 1700, 1800 and 1900 cover might fit. You'd have to measure the 1600's and e-mail them to find out.

Ok......and thanks for the response.

Anybody know where that thread that addresses what covers will fit might be?

Or anybody have any other possible sources for a dust cover that fits the SL-1600?

Muzrik......I talked to somebody at Encompass at the main office in Florida and he said they don't have it......apparently you talked to somebody else. Anyway, doesn't look good there.
