Technics SL-7 VS Sony PS-FL77 , which is better?

I'd vote for the Technics. The Sony might have a better arm with the Biotracer concept, though I think even that is of limited benefit with a lightweight and short T4P configuration, but the gimickiness of the drawer is a downside to me. I like gadgets but it's more complex than it needs to be.

In monetary terms the Technics was a more expensive turntable when new (about 1981) than the Sony in 1983. It also had better specs for wow & flutter and S/N ratio.

I wouldn’t call the drawer a gimmick. If you want to be able to stack things on top, the Sony is a pretty nice record player.

Gimmick might be a bit strong but I've worked on similar turntables and the extra mechanism can be problematic. It also ends up with a less stable platform for the platter and record. That said, I can appreciate that they have a place.

Do the Sony linear trackers actually implement Biotracer at this price point?

Apparently it does have the Biotracer feature.

I agree the PS-FL77's "have a place." Here's where I put mine.

I have a PS-FL 7, it's a nice table, built like a tank and sounds good. The drawer is a nice touch if space is limited. Never had a problem with it once I changed the arm belts

If buying on the bay, the SL-7 has a major advantage over the PS-FL77— the platter on the Technics is secured to the spindle with a nut. This prevents the platter from coming loose in transit and bashing the tonearm, cart, and other delicate parts. If the seller just packs the Sony in a box without securing the platter or removing it, it will very likely come loose and cause damage.
