Test speakers

What do you guys use as your "test" speakers, when first hooking up an unknown amp or receiver?

Little Radio Shack thingies; dump finds with extended-range drivers. They might be Minimus 2.5s... I don't recall for sure.

I always check for DC at the outputs of foundling soiled state amplifiers before risking any speakers on them (learned this the hard way).

I have a 12" guitar speaker that was damaged in shipping (basket is bent out of round) but still plays so it gets connected to anything that might smoke.

I have 8 ohm 100W dummy loads for initial connection; if those don't heat up, I hook up some old KLH model 1000s I originally bought for garage speakers.

Minimus 7's and Infinity RS 2000's typically.

I use a pair of BPC-ish Sony 2 way speakers which probably came with a rack system in the early 90's. Enough to hear any major amp faults...and they were free.

Minimus 7's - if you drop them they're usually ok, they take up hardly any space and if they blow up you still sleep nights.

Perhaps Minimus 3.5s, scaled down Minimus Sevens. That is what I use.

Boston Acoustics HD-8's. Fairly nice sounding speakers. Only paid five bucks for the pair so I'm not really worried if they get trashed.

I've used 5" drivers that were either fuse connected DC or AC coupled. AC coupling doesn't mean you won't see drifting DC if the cap is large enough. ...in speaker kit cheapo cabinets.

Cerwin Vega D-9s or the 5's. If I want a closer listen I hook up the Infinity RS4000's and then if all goes well a set of B&Ws for closer detail.

i use a pair of bose model 21's. the cabinets are trashed and one of the tweeters has a busted cone, so no worries. besides, they're bose.
