I'd have to say the Sylvania are the most beefiest and can take the most abuse.

And a toss up between the GE and Sylvania for sound, with Sylvania being flatter
and more extended across the spectrum, but the GE maybe an sweeter midrange?
 
Thanks Keg, I'm Rolling Both those now....I'll let you know after the Sylvanias get a chance to Burn In...So far tho, I'm Leaning toward the GEs...

Ahh you got those Sylvanias with the black plates
on the triodes, I don't remember how those sound.
 
If you want to shake it up and get a bit more power.. :smoke:

If your running 2 of those chokes in the power supply remove one.
2 really is overkill here as far as getting the supply clean, and with
2 in there your dropping a fair amount of voltage across them here.
(that is, those radiodaze 8H chokes)

You can also increase the size of that first cap in the supply, upto
say 40uf max, but 20-33uf should definitely raise up voltage though.

Just check plate dissipation on the output an keep it to 18w or less.
 
Yah your Sylvanias have the black plates version on the triode sections.
(there's black and gray variants, along with different shapes as well)

I can't remember how they sounded compared to the gray plate versions.

I think I've seen at least a dozen different variants of the 6LU8/6LR8 tube.
(plenty of tubes to roll and check for sound differences) :)
 
Hello everyone and thank you!

A few years ago i was lurking in this thread waiting to see the end results. Recently, I just remembered this thread existed and thought id give it a try. No previous experience with tubes before, so its all new, and quite interesting. I have more ambition than electronics knowledge, so this may take a while for me to put together correctly... we'll see.

Recently ordered the following:
(Edcors arrived at my door today)
1x Edcor XPWR007-120
2x Edcor GXSE15-8-5K
2x Hammond 158Q Chokes
2x GE 6LU8s
and a bunch of caps, resistors, etc. (including 2 MKP10 caps)

Gonna go with the 5V4G rectifier. Are there any other 5v rectifier options?

Anything special a noob like me should know with this setup? The schematic seems pretty straight forward and easy to read. Any adjustments I might have to make if using these edcors and the hammond chokes?


Hopefully I will report back soon with a completed amp ...or a rant of frustration.

Sorry meant to respond earlier. ;)

But I looked over your transformers and you should be fine.

Using the 5V4 rectifier is fine as well, and yes many different
rectifiers can drop in the socket, like 5AR4 and 5U4 an others.

When you get to building just ask, and I am Sure we can Help.
 
Just wired the power supply and i'm getting 420v for B+ with 121v from the wall. The first cap is 10uf and i'm guessing i just simply need lower it to 5uf or something... Whats the formula for figuring out this value? Thanks
 
Are you running the power supply unloaded?

If so your voltages will be quite high, you need a load to see "real" voltages.
 
Yes, or use something like a 25w 7.5k resistor as the test load,
and you should see "around" 340v or so with that kind of a load.
 
You can kinda see how that works with PSUDII, by changing the
load from say 115ma down to say 1ma, and see that voltage rise.
 
We'', I just found this thread a few days ago and now I have read it and beginning to digest it. What an awesome thread! I'm gathering the parts to build one of these and I am having trouble finding the Radio Daze RDC-100 choke. It appears that RD no longer has any of these. I see some of you are substituting a Hammond choke. Which one have you decided to use? I have found a Hammond 159P (10H, 125ma, 155ohms, 500VDC). Any suggestions as to whether this will work? Also, Kegger suggested in post #1004 to remove one of the chokes. If I only used one, would Hammond this still be the recommended one?
 
Thanks Kegger. No hurry, I'll be out of town this weekend anyway. I don't understand the relationship between the values of the RD choke suggested and what would be acceptable.
 
it works! just turned it on and it sounds good. No distortion or anything, however I do have to turn it to max volume to get a decent sound.

I'm hoping this is because of the only pair of speakers i have to test it on... (i'm using 8ohm outputs)

What did your B+ shake out to once everything is warm and running?

Hi Kegger,

I have collected enough parts to build one. I am planning to use the power supply above. Do you mean I can let go of one choke and it still works ok? And also, is the supply capable of handing 2 channels or I should stick to one supply per channel?
