The Best Greatest hits album of all time?

The_Moody_Blues_Anthology.jpg

If you are into the Moody, this one has a lot!

Also in the vein of compilations:

Joy Division
Still
(Factory, 1981)

The Substance album from 1988 is more of a "greatest hits" collection for Joy Division. Still was more of a rarities & unreleased collection, if my memory serves. Substance was a companion to the New Order collection of the same name from 1987, which is a fantastic "greatest hits" set focusing on the 12" versions of their singles.

The Bauhaus Volume One and Volume Two (released as separate CDs but a two-LP set) have their place, but the later & more concise single CD Crackle has the advantage of the original 12" version of "Bela Lugosi's Dead," where the earlier Vol. One had a live version of the song, due to licensing issues IIRC.

While I'm thinking of post-punk/goth, these two cover The Cure quite well, a band I'd rank them in the top tier from that scene as far as the strength of their pop singles:

Couple of my faves that I haven't seen listed yet...

Mellencamp - best I could do
Night Ranger - GH
Journey - Time3
Rush - Chronicles

I just got a copy of Guess Who's greatest hits and after hearing it for the first time ever I would definitly put it on the list.

Some great suggestions here.

I just finished CSN&Y's "So Far". I had forgotten how beautiful that album is (SL-1210 M3D w/Grado Gold, Sansui Six, Small Advents).
