DAMN......I had some SP15a's in some 8 cu ft cabs and they sounded pretty good!! Pump some freon in yours and have a walk in freezer man! Those cabs are suited for the 30" EV driver......

With cabs like those, I'd go on the warpath to find a pair of those original 30" drivers for them. Restore them cosmetically, brace and dampen them a bit, to do what you can to take a bit of "boom" out of them, and enjoy some rare vintage sound! :music:

But you can use them for whatever you wish. The alternative --using them with other drivers-- should probably at least be done conservatively and reversibly, so that they COULD be restored to being 30" driver cabs at some future date.

I can appreciate what you're saying. I just don't think running into an affordable pair of 30" woofs is very likely.
However,since I have two pair of SP15's and original EV specs called for 20 or more cubic feet these should be perfect for the project I have been envisioning.
The "ears" on Mickey and Minnie are openings for 12" drivers.
The squares in the middle were cut for EV ST350's and the rectangle above that,EV SM120A's
My previous diabolical plan included everything but the two 12'' drivers,using an SP15 instead of the 30" woofer.
The cabs I was going to build were to be 50 x 28 X 23 overall.
BTW,I made that sketch in April. :yes:

There are three of the 30" woofers up for sale at that auction place, now.
 
Can those original baffles be saved, just in case you run across those 30" EV woofs? Those cabinets are insanely huge, how much do they weigh? You could stuff three of your current cabinets in one of those. :D Hell, Bear is a big dog, and he looks like a puppy in front of those things!

Well,the baffles are made of particle board.Were talkin' the cheap stuff here.
So my take is that they gotta go. If these were Patricians,I'd keep them intact until I found the right pieces.:yes:
These are nice looking cabs,but pretty "flimsy" for lack of a better word.
Almost more like frames than cabinets.They're going to need a ton of bracing,and a bit of modification.
I'm not sure of the weight,but getting them into and out of my truck is a two man job.
Yeah,it's funny,I was looking around for something to put in the picture to give them some scale when Bear came a laid down if front of them.:D

No offense intended to their 'old' home, but I'd say you're going to like the appearance of their 'new' home a whole lot more. Should go very nicely with that console you've got. :thmbsp:

No offense taken Jim.The cabinets you saw were always meant as "temporary living space" for my EV's. The plan was always to build new enclosures for one set of drivers.Then modify and beautify the cabs you saw and heard.
It was by pure chance that I happened to run across Dave's CL ad for the Big MoFo's.
Imagine my surprise when he called me and said ..." this is Dave Newman with the EV cabinets..."Dave Newman ? "That name sounds familiar...
....Stephen J ?....uh huh ".....:D
 
Is there room to mount your horns inside these new cabs?

Fostex makes a 30" woofer. Expensive, yes, but a fraction of the price of the 30" EV's: https://www.madisound.com/store/product_info.php?products_id=8583

Off Topic, sort of: Back in the late 90s I had Zalytron make some 24 cubic foot cabinets for the PHY-HP KM30.

The details are fuzzy now, but I think the idea was to run some kind of EBS tuning with an Fb of around 16hz. These things were made of 1 1/2" MDF and were massive - it took 5 men to get them through the front door.

Unfortunately, I had more enthusiasm (and money) than brains, and never really got them dialed-in.

Whoever bought the contents of my house after my hospitalization got a huge treasure trove of half-baked speaker projects.
 
Dude. With an SP15A in 31 cubic feet, tuned to 28 Hz, WinISD says that f3 is 25.4Hz. Two 6" diameter vents, about 1.75" long, should do it.

If you did that, I'd try adding a tiny amount of series resistance... like say .5 to 1 ohm or so. Might 'fatten up' the bass, and make them truly satisfying down to the mid 20s...
