The Butt Ugliest Receiver Ever???

I'll zip up my flame suit, duck, and then say that I find the entire Concept line to be realllly ugly things.

This is just an amp, but for something out of the mid 70's you'd expect alot better looking! It a B&O Beolab 1700. Quite ugly and needs alot of work. Its missing its teak sides, still have the top though.

Now we're getting somewhere. Looks pretty ugly, to me.:thmbsp:

Nothing ugly about it, too me, when it's all in one piece.

No worries, just send those aesthetically offensive units on over... I'll store them out of sight for you :D

Spent lotsa time with test equipment, so it's a comfortable look.

Outside, kinda like Akai or Nikko. It's not quite Bauhaus but functional without the raw industrial edge. works for me. Nondescript (not a SX-1250 DC-10 cockpit) and overly symmetrical (compared to Rotel); looks just as good today as it did in 1977...

It's like a supermodel in flannel. Just remove the outer layers... ;)

the Galaxy Commander is NOT an ugly receiver!!:thumbsdn::grumpy: granted, there are much better units out there, (hinthint, PIONEER VSX-D1S) but the KR-1000 is just so damned futuristic in that unique, delightful early 80's way!! the sucker was made the year i was born, for cryin' out loud!! dammit, i want one!!:music:

The thing with the Galaxy Commander is that pushing the wrong combination of buttons might activate the transporter, or launch a photon torpedo, or something ... seriously, I have always thought it looked kind of cool.

Looks like you have to have digital readout to be considered for the thread. Nonetheless, I'm sticking to my guns.
Having forgotten pics earlier, I give you the 4140:

Yup, that's UGLY. Reminds me of my brother in law's old Plymuth
with the push button tranny, but the Galaxy Comander takes it. Butt Ugly.
Where's the flux capasiter?

The JVC is a 301 or larger and despite its looks, that some really like and some really hate with few not having an opinion, actually is a really nice receiver, on par with the better Pioneers, etc. The Commander I'ver not heard but it looks like a design by committee that never met.

akaiAA_R22.jpg

For your approval... The Akai AA-R22. I bought one in the early 80's and it was surpassed in it ugliness only by it's crummy performance. It went back to Akai twice for the Processor Chip needing to be replaced. It turns out a co-worker in the late 80's was the US Service Manager. He was laid off when Akai ceased selling consumer products in the US.

My set-up, at the time, consisted of the AA-R22, an Akai AP-A1 Turntable and a pair of Studio Monitor Series V speakers. Anyone here ever heard of the Studio Monitor Series V? The epitome of blahhhhhhh. :puke:

The pseudo-cool "block diagram" display sent shivers up your spine when it started flashing because the display chip was screwing up. Also, the front folding flap (say that 3 times quickly) that hid the balance and tone adjustments was a magnet for my 5 year old son and ended up broken off after only 3 months. This monument to futuristic looking audio components farted out an earth-shaking (I'm being sarcastic) 30WPC. :thmbsp: :boring::drool::boring:
