The Butt Ugliest Receiver Ever???

to me these stuffs are more utilitarian than decorative, so I don't see looks as being much of a factor when buying/owning. I kind of like them to have a sort of industrial look.
the important things;
1) howzit sound to ya? (and do it fit the budget?)
2) do it light up when on? (nothing like my Craig's dial lit up at night...)
3) still better than BPC.
having said all that...that Revox (on page 5 bottom) is pretty grim-looking.

This might qualify. Sansui QR-4500, flea-bay item 140193925227

Hi,

My nominees of what has been posted:

1: The Superscope receiver mentioned here. Pink (What were they thinking? Very Fugly).
2. The Grundig receiver pictured.
3. The pictured MCS receiver.

Note: I'll disagree with the ReVox receiver being ugly. It's sort of good looking in a businesslike way. The Bose receiver is decent looking, superb performing, and is arguably the best product to come from Dr. Bose. It's underrated.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring in defense of the H/k at the top of this thread. I have my eye on the 560 from this line. I think they look great. The x30 line is no slouch in the looks or sound department, but I can't fault them for making something completely different. It gives me something else to collect! And I actually think they look great, with the possible exception of the pinkish hue to the tuning scale when lit.

The Revox looks like a piece of test equipment but it is, I understand, an outstanding performer.

The MCS is way over the top. UGH! It looks like those cheapo brands like YORX and ELECTROBRAND that substituted decals and labels for good taste and performance. If you're gonna overdesign the facade do it like Marantz did the 2270! That had a lot of stuff on the front but everything actually did something and looked like it belonged there.

My vote for most ugly goes to the MCS. No contest. Even the hideous Grundig is at least ugly in an industrial way. The MCS is one of the champions of the "what were they thinking" school.

BTW. Grundig did not go out of business but was purchased by France's ETON, which still markets radios under the Grundig name.

:DThis thread is absolutely terrible, and should be locked for lack of creative interest. Here we have six pages of suggestions, or whatever, and only twelve posts actually have pictures of what they consider ugly receivers.

And Yet, everyone is crawling over each other to post pictures of their favorite looking receiver over at the other thread.

I want to see some Ugly receivers, and I don't care whether they died, due to deceleration trauma, from the sixth story, on to the sidewalk. I want some U G L Y! Something like this; :D :thumbsdn::D

None of my Boatanchors are gonna win the Good Housekeeping award for looks, but the fugliest one I have is my Hallicrafters SX-73. This from the same outfit that pretty much at the same time had Raymond Loewy design the cases for a few of their other sets...

I know this is an old thread but would like to add a couple of uglies from my very own collection.

First, an ugly but a goodie!

Now just ugly!!!

I have to admit I've always liked the Altec receivers. Love those big "push panels".

The Telefunken, um, if it didn't have that damn cassette deck built in...

It's worse it's a micro cassette:wtf:
I just read this whole thing and the galaxy commander and the grundig pics are not showing up,can someone repost them please? Until I see those I'll pick Sansui's with the meters on different levels and colors:yuck: and as a huge Marantz fan I'd rip the gut's out of the 2385 and put it in well, anything but that ugly...wipeing unpleasant stomach contents off shirt..And I was hoping for more, sice this thread was dragged up some of you nebee's post up some of your stuff. We'll be nice Trust Us!:D

Lots of pics, but none of that grundig everybody seems to find hideous.

However, to me most of the receivers posted here look either dated or are just plane Jane looking. Not exactly ugly...

But this one from a couple pages back:

Oh yes! That's not just ugly, it's f***ing ugly! It looks more like an early 80's cable box then a receiver!

This is just an amp, but for something out of the mid 70's you'd expect alot better looking! It a B&O Beolab 1700. Quite ugly and needs alot of work. Its missing its teak sides, still have the top though.
