The Great Weight Loss Challenge -09

That's a very high goal! I'm 41, and I play by the hardline rules when it comes to eating, and I work out 4 days/week. I had mine measured a couple weeks ago, and it's 5.3:banana: . My wife is annoyed because she's in excellent shape too, and hers is (Well, I better not publish it on the Internet if I know what's good for me), but you'd think that the way she takes care of her health, it would be lower than mine. She's a blackbelt, and also was a motocross stunt girl in the 90s.

It wasn't easy at all, but when I turned 40, I decided it's now or never. I've been in decent shape for the past 20 years, but never where I wanted to be until now. When you hit 6% or so, you'll have veins popping out everywhere; even the abs! The self esteem escalates too, when you put this much work into something and you get the results. It's 100% worth the hard work!

Charles

Woman naturally have a higher body fat % than men.

It really does feel great when you can see/feel results, and especially when you meet a goal. Congrats on reaching yours!

I kinda work at it, but not very hard. I enjoy getting out and doing stuff, that and sensible, healthy eating is all it takes. Really! Just do it consistently.

Last year I turned 50. Couple of days ago a 30ish guy at the climbing gym ask me how old I was. He thought I was around 35. It's even nicer when the younger women think so.

Your body and mind is the greatest piecs of gear that you have. Take good care of them and it will take good care of you.

Don't "work out" go out and "play!" Do outdoor or physical activities that are fun and you won't stop.

Carl

So I have to ask how you guys do this? What do you guys eat and what kind of a work out routine do you do? Do you lift weights? How much time do you spend doing the various activities and how many times a week?:scratch2:

I follow the CrossFit.com workouts. 3 days on 1 day off. I try to eat as simple as possible. Basically if a caveman couldn't eat it, I wont. So no refined sugars, or flours, no corn starch ect. It is tough at first but once you start to see the results and it becomes a lifestyle change NOT a diet it become very easy!

It's easier to say what I don't eat or drink. Processed foods and sodas. I try and avoid most stuff that comes out of a box, bag or can. Somethings you can't avoid like cheese, olives, chocolate :D etc. Read and understand the nutrition labels. Really good way to start by keeping track of all the fat, sodium, sugar that you consume. Stay under 100%!

I eat everything else, but don't over eat. Fruits, veggies, pasta, rice, steak. Make you meals multi-colored and balanced! I love to cook, so I know what goes into the dishes. Processed foods has to much extra crap that you don't need! Use fresh and seasonal produce.

I love butter, but often use olive oil. I love desserts, but save it for occasions.

Instead of a baked potato with butter and or sour cream, bacon bits, cheese, etc. have garlic mashed potatoes! Find alternately tasty foods. Healthy foods don't have to be bland. Learn to cook healthy, check out some cookbooks and make sure the author is on the thin side! You are what you eat!

I don't lift weights or work out per se. It's not fun. I play! I go to a climbing gym, for 3 hours, couple times a week. It's like a huge jungle gym. It's hecka fun! Great for upper body and core strength (abs). For the bottom half, hikes in the hills, mountain bike, jog. The trick here is do it where it's interesting or make it interesting by taking a camera or iPod or something.

I also surf during the warmer weather and swimming is great low impact sport. I used to think yoga was a girlie new-age sorta thing. It's one of the toughest things I do, it kicks my butt. It's great for loosening tightness and it helps re-align your body and you learn to breath. The other plus is that the classes are usually packed with women in tights!

The key to all this, is a positive attitude and a healthy life style. You don't have to go gonzo and work out everyday. But do get out and do stuff that is fun... physically and mentally. Lugging 60 lb. speakers from GW doesn't count!

There are so many activites you can do... find something that fits you and someone you can go out and play with. But make sure you start of slow and easy and work your way up. If you are having fun you're not going to stop.

Couple of years ago while surfing, I saw a woman in her 60s boogie boarding. You should've seen the grin on her face! My older friend who is closing in on 60 who had a knee replacement is back out surfing and loving it. My 75 year old mother-in-law does aerobics, walks her dog daily, keeps active and will probably live too a 100+. I also know a bunch of guys from 45 to 70 that mountain bike. Most of them leave me in the dust. All these people have one thing in common.

They are getting out and having fun!

My usual diet, which is pretty routine unless I'm out of town, is as follows:

7:30 AM breakfast; (always routine, I don't need variety at breakfast)

1/4 cup Quaker regular oats (about 2/3 cup of actual oat meal) with 1 tablespoon raw walnuts, and a squirt of honey, a serving of microwaved "Egg Beaters" non-cholesterol, maybe about 2 eggs worth, and a 4-oz unsweetened apple sauce. A few cups of coffee with breakfast, lasting a couple hours after.

Someplace 11:30-1:00 lunch; variety of things, either a bagel sandwich with Buddig turkey or chicken, (NO mayo, as I hate that anyway), just mustard. OR, a can of tuna (Again, NO mayo). Or, a microwave pasta bowl, etc. Also a granola bar, or a few Triscuits, or? No burgers, fries, etc., but maybe a plain burger once a month at lunchtime. And I don't take cheese or other add-ons to any sandwiches. With lunch, I try to eat fruit if on hand.

NOT after 6, dinner; Often eat out, but as with lunch, it's something non-fried and free from any goo such as mayo or salad dressing, etc. When I have a salad, I have only plain vinegar on it. Plenty of hot peppers. Example: Last night, Kay and I went to a local barbecue place, and I had a chicken breast with a side of corn.

DRINKS: Water 95% of the time. I'm part German, so I have to keep the culture and have a beer now & then. A 6-pack every 2 or 3 months. No liquor, VERY FEW diet sodas, NEVER sugary ones. I drink 10 gallons of water per week. That sounds like a lot, but I have a medical problem that causes me to be thirsty all the time. I've drunk 1.5 litres just in the few minutes of typing this post .

Snacks: Not many. A single serving pack of raw nuts, or maybe some Wheat Thins (yes, fattening, but I like them!!!!) Luckily, I hate candy and cake, etc, and always have. I love salt, which is a bad thing, so I just don't keep chips and stuff in the house. If it's here, I eat it. So I just don't buy it.

My workout program: I'm not into bodybuilding; just want to stay cut and lean. I have a reasonably well-equipped weight room in the house, and I work out in there 3 days a week on average; about 90 minutes including warmup each of the days. I also do an ab workout 7 days/week each morning of 320 reps (150 standard crunches, and 80 reps side crunches each side). and I also do plenty of outdoor physical work, and ride dirt bikes. This, with the eating habits, seems to do the job for me.

This whole fitness thing is mind-over-matter, in MOST cases. If you're doing what your doctor tells you to do, and you are truthful with yourself about what you're eating and how you're exercising, and you can't seem to do it, you might need to have some hormone tests done. If your thyroid, parathyroid, or sex hormones are out of tolerance, you can find it nearly impossible to maintain a healthy body mass index. Sadly, most medical insurance won't pay for those tests, which is stupid, since these tests can sometimes reverse chronic obesity and thus offset costly heart and other health problems.

I know this might sound boring, but I have found that I no longer even like fries, pies, and that stuff. If I think I like it, I just think about how hard it was to get here, and I go take my shirt off and look in the mirror, and think about my age. That instantly gets rid of any fatty food craving!

Charles

The photos are sort-of a before & after... The one of me gulping down the water was taken in early summer '08, and the one with the stupid grin was taken about a month ago, shortly after I had the 5.3% reading. I really didn't notice any difference in my weight, or fit of clothes, but I really see veins popping out with the lower body fat content. That happened fairly suddenly, as compared to how long it takes to get rid of an inch of waist.

So is this something that is not to bad to eat.:scratch2:
http://www2.kelloggs.com/ServeImage.aspx?BID=4861&MD5=ed0f2edd68f0586c4c9eb66354716f7c

I have been eating this with a three table spoons of raisins about 5 days a week for a while. Also add a little bit of bran flakes so that I can chew through the twigs, otherwise the all bran seems to swell up while your chewing it. I did see that it has high fructose cornsyrup, which from what I here is the devil, but it does have a lot of fiber and very little sugar and sodium.

Back in again, didnt get to ride the mountain bike for two months so I put on 10-15lbs (at 200 now)so I gotta get back on the as long as the weather cooperates. Hoping to get 30-50 miles of trail riding in a week, just have to see if school agrees.

Hey that sounds great and being outside sure beats going from one class to another without any thing to break up the day.:thmbsp:

Should be fun...just not as good as last semester was....during that period I had a sound only independent study where I could hone my recording skills and make every system in the school sound better.

Thanks alot for the insightful post. The biggest change I think we all need to make is to look at the "new" way of eating as a lifestyle and not a temporary phase. Whats the point of losing weight if you are just going to put it back on again?

Do you mind if we lean on you a little bit for motivation, dietary and exercise advice?

Awesome! How does it work? Do you track milage?

I don't have the slightest clue..it starts this afternoon and I have it 3x a week, twive for 90 minutes, once for 50 minutes.

I'll post again when I know more.

My wife always does well with Weight Watchers recipes.. I've been making them and eating them lately, and amazing how much better I feel already. Very low fat stuff, and surprisingly not too bad on the pallet either... It's mostly all lean meats and fish, veggie, fruit, and lots of herbs and spices...

I've been getting started in exercising every evening, and AMAZING how out of shape I am.. winded and sore after 15 minutes on a glider, and not able to do many sets with a bow-flex.. but each night I'm adding 5 minutes more, and so far up to 25 minutes... Hope to be to an hour or more by the end of the month..

Put me down as well.

I am currently 6'1" and weigh 317 pounds.

I have an active job, but I just need a better way to curb those addictions to sweets and fast food.

Any ideas?

I work at Dominos as a pizza delivery driver. I run to and from the store on my deliveries. I have lost a couple pounds, but not as much as I want.

;)

I have zero self-discipline when there are things like chips & crackers lying around the house. So I just don't buy that stuff. I definitely have an addiction to those things. Another thing I forgot to mention is that I used to have a beer (or 3) every night, and I quit that about a year ago. Now I only have one now & then, and ONLY at lunch time so as not to have the alcohol turn into sugar and mis-metabolize all that I've eaten into fat. I don't know what role that played in helping me get back into shape, but it sure didn't hurt! I had a fairly good layer of body fat 2 years ago, but I never got over a 34 waist. Just pudgy overall, and no tone.

Probably the single biggest factor for me was self esteem. I was in a bad relationship with my ex-girlfriend for NINE YEARS, and I was in a failing dead-end career (TV-VCR repair), no money in the bank, no future, and I just quit bothering with myself, I guess. Before that, I worked out all the time, and was in great shape. Once the bad relationship ended, and I met my wife Kay, I started feeling good about myself, and one result of that was that I once again wanted to do right for myself. I know that's a lot of psychological mumbo-jumbo, but it's all part of the big picture.

Anyone who is trying every physical way to maintain a good body but isn't having success, and does not have any illnesses or hormone problems, might also need to think about what's going on with their pursuit of life & livelihood. If you're feeling bad about a situation you're in, or something you feel you've failed at (MY SITUATION MANY TIMES IN THE PAST), it's not possible to be successful in getting into/staying in shape, in my opinion. A bad marriage or a disliked career is a deal breaker, also a parent who is still running your life, adult children still living home and/or depending on you for support ($ or emotionally), or friends who decide what's best for you and you don't even know it, and any number of other situations that people are deeply involved in, and often haven't a clue. Those things are silent failures in the lives of many people, and often the quick symptom cover-up is to get drugged by a psychiatrist with Prozac or the like. It doesn't work. You have to take the bull by the horns, get rid of the people and situations in your life that are bringing you down, and nobody can do it for you. I can personally guarantee it.

Please note that this is written based on MY experiences, and I in no way insinuate that it may or may not apply to anyone reading it. I am not a psychiatrist, and offer no official advice...

Charles

Very good advice Kx.. I've had lots of similar issues in my life, and finally learned... Got a Problem... Get Rid of It!!! You'll feel much better if you do..

Hey we could be twins from the neck down...........................when I'm dreaming that is.:D

Actually I look more like Sansui Louie's avatar.

"An object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by a equal or stronger force."
Isaac Newton

"...unless acted upon by a equal or stronger force" = couch, chips & beer, tv, being on-line, etc.

I went for a light run last night. It was quite chilly, so I had on a beanie, gloves, and a warm jacket. I also took along my iPod. After the 4.5 mile loop I was almost at home... I ran right by and ran a couple of more miles. I was drenched in sweat when I finally came home.

Proving I am more powerful than a bag of chips! I was having some much fun that I spaced out and forgot about the BCS Championship game.
