The Great Weight Loss Challenge -09

Well.. so far, I've lost a couple pounds.. about 4 it appears.. but the biggest deal, I feel SO MUCH better.. I have energy after I started cutting out all the fat, and actually excercise and want to do something after I get home... I know the first few pounds go fast, but hopefully in a few months I can be down the 15 I want..

THe first day of walking fitness, we had a sub...so we did nothing.

I walked about a mile and a half today...after doing the usual intro to the course bs...

It'll be a good class, I know.

I have been workingout, for the rest of the month I am doing riptoes starting strengh. I found an old pic of me it's small but it gives an idea. I was prob around 230 in the first pic. Second pic is me today, somewhat skinny with no muscle weighing in at 165.

Ok, so... I guess this is sympathy weight gain or something. :D My wife and I have been eating like crap since she became pregnant (yay!).

Anyway I don't know what I weigh but it feels like over 200 now, at 6'1" and the 34" pants are too tight again. Whereas I would like to be back to where I was mid year around 180 with room to spare in 34's.

Don't want to go another few years and be unhealthy, etc. My dad is suffering from congestive heart failure-- he was always 20 or 30# overweight and ate poor. Now he is on oxygen all the time and weighs like 140. :(

So, time for some exercise, and figuring out how to not eat like ass all the time. Time to muster some willpower. I simply eat too much and eat bad stuff too often and don't exercise a bit.

Michael

Unfortunately poor nutrition and not exercising is a "learned" behavoir. Fortunately you can unlearn the bad and learn what's good... and still have cake!

Good luck guys!

Great Minds huh Donny? I am in the middle of Rippetoe's Starting Strength also. Are you drinking the milk? I am already a fat guy so I am only drinking a half gallon a day but I cant believe the results after only 2 months. I am up to a 325 deadlift from 265 and my squat has improved by almost 100lbs. It is a great program.

I'm cheating on the diet,I am getting alot of protein 200grams yesterday.
Your gains are impressive! I won't post what I lift cause it's sad haha. I am making progress but it's slow,I'm not using enough weight on dead and squats because of knee and back problems.

The first week is nearly down, and I truly believe in myself this time! I've watched my food intake very closely (total calories, fats, etc.) and have been walking two miles each evening. As others have already said...it's a LIFESTYLE change, not just a diet. Oh, and here are my before pics:

200 grams is about right for your bodyweight. There is no cheating on SS, Mark Rippetoe said something to effect of "Broccoli doesn't make you strong, Big Macs do." I am switching back to CrossFit in a few more weeks to lose this extra bodyfat I have gained though.

You fellas are right it is a lifestyle change. And really once you get it down, nothing tastes as good as being skinny feels!

Crossfit is awesome but it pwned me as in I can't handle crossfit!

Yup.. but Big Macs will also make you fat and unhealthy, whereas broccoli is much healthier.

Being super strong is over-rated. Most people don't require the power to be benching refrigerators on a daily basis. Do work on activities that builds stamina. This will absolutely burn fat and build practical strength. Find that balance.

I think he was refering to new comers building a strength base to work with later. You obviously cannot live that way forever! I think through CrossFit and Starting Strength I have found a good base of functional strength. I can't bensh a fridge but I am able to knock out a 325lb deadlift and run a 20min 5K, not huge accomplishments by any means but both very practical for real life. :thmbsp:

In the end it comes down to what you said earlier, just get out and do something you like, if walking is your thing walk! If climbing get you going go climb! Anything to get you outside and moving, even if it is a pickup-football game with the local kids. Every movement burns some calories so you may as well make it fun!

Gotcha! I was just making a general statement. :)

I've known guys who lifted weights and were ripped like Hercules. One guy during football practise, another guy while swiming across a channel both passed out because they hyperventilated and or because their lungs couldn't expand due to all the muscle mass. So don't forget to stretch guys!

Maybe some of the habu juice could do wonders... ay?! :D

I drank the Habu Sake once. Only Once! Ouch! I cannot even describe it, one of those things you have to try to fully understand.

My buddy took my advise and trying a diet plan I made him. I was concerned he may not get enough protein so I told him to take whey protein. I just got a call from him he's headed to the ER it turns out he is allergic to something in the whey protein :(

True. You need to be sure your heart and lungs are in decent shape before starting any type of workout. In my case, I have high cholesterol and high blood pressure due to family genes. I keep an extra-close watch on both. I don't eat ANY fatty snacks or food, as I said in my earlier posts. However, that doesn't make anyone immune to high cholesterol & BP. I have a friend who eats fries, burgers, and a gallon of cheesy dressing on every salad, he's 73, and he's 5'7 or so, at 300 lbs with a gut that won't fit through some doors. Perfect cholesterol and BP readings. And here I am, 41, I could give any college football player a run for his money, I'm 6' at 165 lbs, 5.3% body fat, and I have to take pills for blood pressure, and I have cholesterol that scares all doctors. Now can you imagine what shape I'd be in if I ate poorly? I think there'd have been a post in the AK Classified for an estate sale of vintage TV sets many years ago

I had a friend Mike, age 29; a real estate broker in Simi Valley, CA., who looked like he was in better shape than I am... His little brother died in his teens of unexplained heart trouble, soon after, his Mom died of heart trouble, and a year later, so did Mike. He was supposed to be in perfect health, and had just gotten home from competing in a surfing championship in Australia. He got up from his desk, reached out his hand to greet a client, and PLUNK. Out cold on the floor; unable to revive. Later I found out that his family's religion prohibits most medicine and doctors. So I'm assuming they had something that would have been found, or maybe treated, under other circumstances. But it's a lesson to us all. Don't be fooled by "feeling fine". It's the things you don't see or feel that are the most dangerous, and it's also those things that arise when we make a change to our lifestyle, such as beginning a good workout program.
