The Great Weight Loss Challenge -09

I am up about 6lbs due to all the tasty food during my leave to the states. I am back in Okinawa now and ready to really put my nose to the grindstone.

I am up about 5 but I want to belive its lean muscle mass that I have put on and not lost the same amount of fat.

My lap times are about 20 min slow for a 12 mile mountain bike ride so not too bad for really being back in it for a few weeks.

Xmas 08= 247 lbs BMI 30+ (OBESE)
1/1/09 Started Weight Watchers
2/27/09= 222 lbs No longer obese but still overweight.
goal summer 09= 185 lbs @ 6"2' tall

I`m not what I would call overweight however I started the year out at 222. I am 6`3"
and am now down to 208. Hope to get back to around 198. Lots of excercise and Bicycling as well as not eating as much of Suzie`s baking. Mmmmm good stuff must resist!

I went back to 24HourFitness last night. A friend of mine joined so we will go together to encourage each other to work out. I worked out for almost an hour. It felt good!

Nice...it does feel good to do a little exercise....

I was at the gym this past Sunday for about 6 hours. 1 1/2 hours of yoga, then into the sauna. Went out and had lunch, some award winning German sausage sandwhich, chocolate cookies, sparkling water and picked up some vinyl. Met back at the climbing gym climbed for another 3 hours, more sauna. Went home had some veggie curry and listened to some new tunes.

Monday when I woke up I felt like a truck had run me over. Feels good! :D

I've done that in the past, and somehow wound up dropping out... My best success is slow but STEADY progress over the past several years. Too much too quick can turn you off to the whole thing. I work out for 90 minutes, 4 days/week (different muscle groups basically twice/week). I do change that every few weeks between shorter, heavier workouts, and easier, longer ones. For me, that balances between building and maintaining, and keeps me on track. However separately, I do my ab routine 7 days a week (150 standard reps crunches, 85 reps each side obliques, and Roman chair hyperextension sit-ups; 50 reps every other day). The abs are probably the most difficult to keep in shape for my age. At 41, I could still be in really good shape and get a beer belly at 5% body fat if I didn't keep it up :nono:

My wife sneaked these photos of me Sunday without warning after we went out riding... I'm always critical of my physical condition, especially since I'm turning 42 next week. So she complimented me by showing me this photo next to a similar picture taken 2 years ago. I won't publish that one, but I know it's totally worth the effort I've put into getting back into shape, and being determined to stay that way!

The thing for me is that I DON'T workout. I just get out and play as often as possible. During nicer weather I'll surf before work or bike to work, run or climb after work. 6 hours is a good day for me. There is to much fun things to do than reps and trying to maintain. I can't remember when I last did a sit up or lifted weights, but I'm decently cut for a 50 year old and have a 6-pac going at about 9% bodyfat. Whatever works... right?

:D

Down to 328-60lbs loss from my surgery 3 weeks ago ystrday. The lady/nurse practitioner was VERY pleased w/my progress. I asked her about niggling problems-Soreness in rt side, diahrea, etc, she said that's just part of it, this too shall pass. I don't go back to see 'em til 14 April-Hope to be under 300 by then. But they also said I WILL plateau, & some weeks won't lose as much as others. She told me to give myself some credit, I'm doing GREAT !

Your 42 and have abs like that?............That's just wrong!:yikes: Your giving us a complex!:D

Seriously though, keep up the good work, glad your giving us motivation.:thmbsp:

BTW what is a Roman chair hyperextension sit up?:scratch2:

What he said ! Charles, there's a lot of guys who would have KILLED to look like at 18 what YOU look like at 42...

Thank you! And before I get too proud, let's see if I can maintain it 'til 43 :scratch2: . I'd better keep up with my wife Kay... She's a brown belt, and is 2 years older than I am... She stays in good shape, so it's good motivation for me to have some good competition ;) (Photo c. 2004)

The Roman Chair is a platform where you hook your feet under a bar, and you're lying on an angle with your legs high, then you lean back beyond lying flat, so that your back is bent backwards slightly. This gives a bigger stretch of the abs, and a much longer arc of motion when you do a sit-up. There are a lot of styles of Roman Chairs. Some bodybuilders will have a rack mounted upright so that you basically hang upside-down, and do vertical sit-ups by folding up like a taco. I don't do those, because that is said to increase the size of the abs, and I'm not big enough to have big abs. I just want them flat and low fat.

Charles

My Roman Chair, which is a very unusual one, is safer for someone like me with back trouble. Your thighs sit on the raised pad, and your feet hook under the bar, and you cannot accidentally go too far backwards like you could with a standard Roman Chair. Mine has a max. 20-degree hyperextension angle, and I can increase that if I want by putting spacers and raising the seat.

Don't mess w/Charles' wife...She looks like she could kick the @sses of a division of Marines...And still look like a Goddess while doing it...(grin)

I love doing Glute-Ham sit ups! (The CrossFit version of roman chair sit ups) The pretty much destroy me. Word of warning for anyone out there thinking of giving them a try, start with very low reps and an experienced workout partner they are notorious for inducing rhabdomyolysis, that being said, I still love 'em!
