The Last GREAT Stones Album?

131east23

...near Frank's Pizza!
Do you have an opinion on this? I have been listening to Some Girls quite a bit lately and don't think that anything after that is as good. I do like Emotional Rescue. Tattoo You is nice, especially side two, but it doesn't exude that gritty Stones sound like Some Girls due to its patched together nature. What do you think? I really enjoyed the Mick Taylor era of the stones and see that as the highpoint of the band, especially those tracks where you get a dose of Taylor's guitar work along with Nicky Hopkins on piano.

I'm gonna say this one:

Let It Bleed

Honorable mention for Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street, but they weren't as "great" as Let It Bleed.

IMO (of course).

KeninDC might not see this thread for a few days so I'll bring it to his attention, get him to weigh in, might have a response that will surprise (and enlighten) us. It'll certainly liven up things @ the thread.

Ed & Kris,

Don't forget to cast your votes! We've been through A LOT of Stones material lately!

- eh

My vote is for Exile on Main Street, but an honorable mention to Some Girls. Some Girls was a very enjoyable record with very little filler, but not great.

Yes... I thought that some people with more Stones know-how might not think Some Girls was the last GREAT one and might opt for an earlier LP. I do like Steel Wheels which was mentioned above. I'm partial to Some Girls because I got to experience it in real time, meaning I was 17 when it came out, bought it and have been listening to ever since with great enjoyment. Let It Bleed... now that is a high water mark for sure.

And that's why, it's all nostalgia and most likely the beginning of your musical independence. I get it I have lots of albums like that.

Yep - Sticky Fingers is the be-all, End All Stones record for me ...
I bought it new back in the day and alternated between Ya-yas and Sticky Fingers...
Even better since the All in, extended and expanded 3 disc version of last year!
Followed by Let It Bleed, then probably Exile, and Some Girls comes up as a 4th

Yes. They were still bad boys and your parents would raise their eyebrows when you came home with Stones records.

But it's not about the best Stone's album... just the last one that had the mo-jo.

I also like the live/stripped album from 1995. Just different I guess.

I wore out my eight track of GYYYO, lots of memories in the '64 Impala. If only they had enough good tape for a double LP, getting close with the recent reissue. We're veering into a sidetrack of the best Stones concert, maybe the Mystic one has an opinion.

I also think "Exile" was the last great Stones album, but even much of their lesser work is way above many other bands' output. Their chemistry and longevity are a potent mix.

I'll say Goats Head was the last of the great Stones albums.

This is the last of their great songs, imo.
What a great song. This is rock'n roll at it's best right here. The guitar work and piano work are beyond beautiful. I think of all the Stones songs and Who songs I love and Nicky Hopkins seems to be in there somewhere.
