The Last GREAT Stones Album?

For me the last great Stones album was Steel Wheels.

I'm not saying it was their best album but it was the last one that I really dug and wore out.

I personally like the material they created during the years Mick Taylor was with them. I got to see them in 72 and again during Steel Wheels....well the 72 Stones were a bit better.

Yes, this is a great song. I bought this when it came out. I need to listen to this soon and get reacquainted.

Correct answer is Some Girls. Recorded damn near "live" with all instruments bleeding into one another. The entire band is relatively sober and on fire, having nodded off with Jimmy Miller sometime during the groovy, yet flawed Goat's Head Soup. Some Girls is not their best (Sticky? Exile? Bleed?), but is most certainly their last great album.

Tattoo is basically odds and sods, despite some standout tracks. Steel Wheels is too long.

Yet to hear a Stones album that did not eventually grow on me. Another vote here for side 2 of Tattoo You, just awesome in my world.

some girls
and
love you live .. a phenom live album loaded with blues and rock [listening to it now loud!]
the band is great and mick is at the top of his corniness.
i luved him on snl when he made fun of himself and couldnt help laughing[ the dressing room mirror]

" i ran 20 red lights in his honor" :D

Well, sense it's all a matter of opinion...

For me it's been a L-O-N-G time sense the Stones made an LP I really got into. Maybe a song or two here and there, but like many here have said, you just can't beat those Mick Taylor years. I mean WTF!

.

I change my mind about Some Girls being the last great.
Although, some five years later and having given up on the Stones , I do remember hearing Tattered on the radio and loving it, also dug Faraway Eyes but never gave the album a listen, way too much other stuff going on musically.
In retrospect, it was a wonderful album and it is amazing they pulled it off after such a dry spell.

Ed & Kris,

Don't forget to cast your votes! We've been through A LOT of Stones material lately!

- eh
Very true. I've been on more of a Brian era kick, personally. I'm going to get back to the Ronnie era soon.

I'd have to say Exile. Some Girls would be in the mix, too. I haven't spun that one in ages, so I'll cue it up.

I could have gone Some Girls... but then as I thought about it, Exile... is not merely among the last great Stones LPs, but great LPs in ALL OF ROCK. I burned through 2-3 copies @ vinyl w/in a couple of years of its release.

That's the thing, that whole era of Exile, Sticky, etc is better than Some Girls for my taste. So, SG doesn't equal those others, but is still great.
