The Mid-Century/Danish thread

Cool desk! I love the shape.

I have been trying to stike a deal on a mid mod dining set at a junk store (they mainly buy estate sale left overs). Cross your fingers for me!
 
Got it! Out the door and delivered for $180. Happy birthday to me!

It was manufactured by Broyhill under the Lenoir Chair Company in Lenoir NC. Has a design copyright dated 1962 stamped on the bottom of each chair.

The table has a drop leaf on each long side. The back cutout of the chair is my favorite part.

The table is in fantastic shape. A couple of watermarks came out after a good soaking in Howard’s Feed-N-Wax. Very sturdy.

The chairs need reupholstering. I believe the yellow is the original, and, while nice, is tattered. A couple of chairs have loose backs (backrest and back legs). The screws are tight, but I think they just need to be taken apart and re-glued (do that when I get ready to reupholster).

At any rate, I am pleased to find a gem of a set in a furniture wasteland……

Beautiful set. I let four or six of those chairs and a different table (round, with two leaves) get away from me for about $50 at an auction last fall. And yes, I'm still kicking myself.
 
I read a couple days ago about the new trends in decorating and mid century was mentioned as making a big comeback. Simple clean lines as opposed to overstuffed furniture. Get 'em cheap while you can!
 
I grew up with a pair of Danish Modern end tables and coffee table. I still have all three pieces (all in acute need of refinishing), but I must admit my taste runs into older pieces, my favorite furniture here is my (real mahogany) Duncan Phyfe dining set and drum table with perfect tooled-leather top.
 
Sam, that desk is amazing. I can't believe the price you got that for. It's really unique. Is there enough room to slide the chair under the angled part? Do you sit at an angle? Anyway, it looks fantastic.

(I like the above posted table and chairs, too...).
 
John, the desk is at normal working desk height and the depth is about like a standard desk at the drawers. Once I get it home, I'll figure out how to situate my computer on it. I'll probably make some sort of lift so I can set the tower underneath it near the wall, leaving only the monitor, keyboard, speakers and mouse on top.

Mid century is popular in many areas. The clean lines blend well with other eras and in a variety of settings (not just homes of the period).

That said, there seems to be no following of it locally. Cheap and gaudy is the trend here! Furniture listings on Craigslist are humorous and sad. The dining set was priced purely on the condition and quality, not on style (I suspect it would bring a fair $ in a larger city).

There was a housing boom here around 1960, so there should be more pieces floating around. In six months of eying things (thrifts, estate sales, Craigslist, junk stores) this has been my lone furniture find. I don’t mind the wait if I can find more pieces in that condition and for such low prices.
 
I picked up this little table at a local Thrift for cheap. No identifiers on it anywhere. Would you guys consider this Mid Century? The Ducks like it a lot. They dance around the table when I crank it up a bit. :yes:

I was thumbing through ReadyMade at the dentist's office and came across a reference to this site. Pretty cool. There may be some speaker stands involving these in my future.
