The Mordaunt-Short Owners Thread

Ohms check. Damaged Woofer = 5 ohms tending to 5.1ohms. Good Woofer = 5 ohms, tending to 4.9 ohms.
DC resistance is similar for both, so a shorted voice coil seems unlikely.

By Upper, I meant with the woofer in its factory vertical orientation with terminals facing the bottom, if looking at it like a clock, i will call the lower portion above the terminals the 6 o'clock position.

If i push gently anywhere from 9 o'clock around to the 2 o'clock, the scratchy noise is most presenty, the cone seems to most resist pushing in at around 11 o'clock.
From around 3 o'clock to 7 o'clock it's most free, without much scratchiness until I push it deeper in.
The fact some positions are better might indicate a misalignment, which could potentially be corrected without major surgery.

by exercising you mean let em play at a decent volume to rub off the corrosion into dust?
I'd be more inclined to stick with manual movement, carefully trying to achieve relatively smooth and quiet movement. An improvement after a few cycles is a good sign, no improvement means stop. Given you now have the woofers back in but rotated you may want to let them sit overnight and try playing them tomorrow. It would be great if this works and it often does. Given these are relatively small and light woofers it might take longer for any sag to be corrected.

QUOTE="inertia8, post: 13803168, member: 323618"]Will I risk damaging the woofer by playing music for a prolonged period in this state?[/QUOTE]
Yes, eventually the insulation on the coil may wear off creating a short, or the coil may even break. This is not something to ignore.

My God those are magnificent..
Thanks! Mine had the factory stands which I still have, they are very handy for speakers that need a short stand. Together they looked great. Unfortunately the speakers themselves never impressed me enough to keep them. When I got them all of the roll surrounds were detached. That was easy enough to fix, however the bass wasn't as good as I expected, possibly because the surrounds were a bit stiff which may have led to their detaching from the cone in the first place. After playing for a while they improved but as per the photos below I have something of a collection and only so much space, so a decision was made. The guy who bought them was thrilled so that was nice - they certainly aren't common. The second photo shows them with their slightly older family members MS30 and MS15. The evolution of the MS30 to the MS35Ti is obvious!

All, would the drivers from a pair of MS25ti work? They appear to have the same markings, MSB A type, are they the same physical size??

I've also watched some interesting youtube vids where a guys uses a Variac at 5v and alternates the power whilst gently applying pressure to buzz off rust etc... thoughts on the same approach of playing a low frequency tone through the driver at low volumes?

Otherwise, I think best to take it to a specialist who can remove the dust cap and see if they are able to re-align the voice coil.

The MS25Ti looks like a smaller, non ported version of the 35Ti. It may use the same woofer and the markings you’ve seen appear to support this. If the woofer/parts are reasonably priced it seems like a good option.

The mechanical corrosion removal method carries risks of making things worse and I wouldn’t do that unless I was fairly sure that was the problem, in which case only a small amount of exercise should be sufficient.

Inverted dust caps can be difficult to remove and unless the coil former is obviously misaligned might not reveal much. The first deconstructive thing I might try is removing the outside of the roll surround to see if realignment helps. But that’s up to your repairer of choice, hopefully they’ll have a good idea of what to do once they have had a look.

Well I can report that flipping 180deg has almost fixed them. I can still make the cone exhibit the scratchy noise but if i push evenly it's very much greatly reduced but unfortunately still present when playing, only noticeable at very low volume and I feel I can perceive a lack of fidelity etc

I do see other pairs for sale (with traditional looking convex dust covers) but I'm not sure if I should go for another set of ms35ti's or put my money into fixing mine.. Or both lol.. Or going for something larger with more bass.

I couldn't pass up the set going for a reasonable price on ebay, so I've snapped em up.. If they are in the condition stated then I'll need to decide what to do with mine... I may repair em and store em.

Hello there, I'm a newcomer to this forum. I'm looking at a pair of MS35Ti speakers for sale in my area. From the photos I can see the serial no. of one of them is 112725. I would appreciate it very much if anyone could advise me roughly what year they were manufactured and what you think they might be worth today. Seller is asking CAD$147

I paid 150aud for a set last week, no stands. They function fine but have minor cosmetic damage (rubbing on one grille corner, holes in other grille, one grille missing the stay, minor wrinkles/chips to bottom corners of cabinets) To me it was worth it.

So from what I can gather the regular dust caps are on the early versions and the inverted and coated dust caps came later. Seems an odd change but I'm sure there must have been a good reason for doing it!

Anyway, I've also seen a pair of 45Ti's for CAD$200 and I'm wondering if I should go with those instead, particularly as they come with factory stands. I noted that A400 didn't rate them. At the end of the day I'm more interested in how they sound than how they look.

And the big question - are either the 35's or 45's an upgrade on my Heybrook HB1's?

With the stands sounds very appealing. Cant speak about the heybrooks. I'd keep the 35's too if you have room. I run 4 speakers and a subwoofer, id run the 35s with the 45s and be in heaven..my 35s are original, and.i gave them a thrashing saturday, and they took whatever I could throw at them. Love them.

I'm thinking of having a mate weld up some stands amd wondering whether to go my own design or mimic the originals..

Oh, I'd go for both the ms45s with stands and 35s then decide after hahah.

Interesting that the concave dust caps came later..

I picked up a pair of Mordaunt-Short Carnival 2s today to go with my Noresco NC1010 tube turntable.

What a wonderful. rich sound they have together and are a perfect match to look at.

They have a bit of cosmetic damage, most of the scuffs came out with cleaning, but I will have to make a new piece of trim for the top of the left one.

Hi everyone, I just picked up a set of Mordaunt Short Carnival III today but the fuses are missing. Anyone have info on the fuse tyo required here? Thanks so much!

Hi everyone,
I own a set of Mordaunt Short Pageant 2, unfortynately one SELF doesn't work anymore. (burned). Does anyone have a SELF for me or a solution please ?
Thanks a lot

Just grabbed a minty pair of M S Pageant 2's. Paired them with my Scott tube gear.

These are very musical speakers. They sound real nice in the mids and highs...great clarity. The bass is better than it has a right to be.

Seldom seen around here so I had to grab them...glad I did. The Brits really got this right.

As far as I know M S is somewhat rare in the states. More prevalent in Great Britain where they were made. Have you looked at European listings on ebay.
