Toze, listening to Eliza Gilkyson this morning and it's a keeper. Dark, but relaxed and very political. Vocals reminiscent of Lucinda Williams with some intense songwriting. I like it!

Goodwill Finds

Went to one of the regular GW stores I frequent and all the vinyl was gone! Asked the manager what's up with that; they usually have about 200 albums out. He said they weren't selling fast enough, but he had some in the back he'd bring out if I wanted to look through them. Bring'em on. And what albums did I find?

Ian and Sylvia / So Much For Dreaming / Vanguard / Sealed

Joan Baez/ Joan Baez (1st - 1960) / Vanguard / Sealed

Richard Betts / Highway Call / Capricorn / Sealed

Leontyne Price / 5 Operatic Scenes / RCA Red Seal / Sealed

Tom Jones / It's Not Unusual - 1st / Parrot / mint

Moral: It pays to ask.

NICE SCORE.... Sealed no less!!!

I think the trick is to have the folks at the TS's understand that you will BUY.... and if ya' can get in the back room before the LP's are sent out to reeeealy get trashed by all the kids, etc. you can find some nice LP's. I have gotten to look through a number of boxes of LP's "in the back" at 2 TS's and it paid off for them...

I was very lucky. What are the chances of finding two Vanguard folk albums nearly 45 years old and unopened? I've seen some very, very rough vinyl in my years of collecting it, but its hits like this that keep one addicted.

BTW, you've made a couple of real hauls lately, too!

Yeppers... I hit the LP section and just park my "you know what" on the floor... Right in front of the piles and grab 15 or 20 at a time and start lookin'. Cull out the ones that look like they might be a keeper and put aside till I have looked at 'em all. Then look at the ones set aside. If I get 1 out of 50 to 75 it's a good day... I also leave the LP section in a much neater condition then when I first sit down:) At least the stuff that is left is stacked and neat:) I have had one or 2 verrrrry good days recently....

Today I hit a garage sale and found these gems........ I hate to admit it, but on CD.

Mastertone 2-cd Jazz Greats collection
Run DMC-King of Rock
Ministry-The mind is a terrible thing to taste
Lenny Kravitz-Circus
Lenny Kravitz-5
Kraftwerk- The Mix- I can't wait to spin this one, well technically,
I can't wait to electronically decipher the
ones and oh's
The Chemical Brothers- Exit Planet Dust
Miles Davis- Kind of Blue
Coolio- it takes a thief
Dave Brubeck- Time Out, now I can jam at a moments notice
and last but not least
Sepultura- Nation

and on cassette I found Live-Lightening Strikes and Jimi Hendrixs- The Ultimate Experience, it is very cool

should be a fun weekend

Made The Usual Rounds

I'm lucky to have have two used vinyl collector shops within a few miles of each other. They're clearing out their CD holdings. One shop has 125K 45s and about 20K albums, and the other has about 5--10K albums (and a pair of Klipsh Heresys I've been working the owner over for about half a year). So, I spent my week's lunch money on:

CDs: Maria Muldaur, Lousiana Love Call
Lucinda Williams, Happy Woman Blues
Clifton Chenier, Frenchin' the boogie
Ella Fitzgerald, The Essential!
Roomful of Blues, Dance All Night

LPs: Zula Bolin, Texas Bluesman, sealed
White Mansions, A Tale of The Civil War, sealed (inspiration for Emmylou Harris's Ballad of Sally Rose album)
Paul Butterfield, Better Days
Dave Brubeck, Jazz Goes To College
Albert Collins, Ice Picking & Frostbite

I only go by every couple of weeks because I can't escape without buying.

Paul Butterfield.... Great blues LP's... I got most of the LP's years ago in a far far distant past life... First time I indulged in "you know what" the tape was playing East - West.... Longest 13 minutes that I ever remembered:) It seemed to play for ever...:) and had to get all the CD's for the office. Was lookin' at one of the CD inserts and who was in the band.....

PAUL SHAFER ... (last name may be off a bit) ... Of recent... DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW...

The Longest 13 miniutes...

Had a very similiar experience in my misspent youth with "Blue Sky" by the Allman Brothers. I'll leave out the details but suffice to say it involved America Samoa, aforesaid Allman's track, a very good female friend, and (eventually) damaged nerve cells. Wouldn't have missed it even if I could remember it all!

Got just one album today...it's been slow for the past week.

Its a jazz score, on Verve Japan label...Stan Getz/Luiz Bonfa "Jazz Samba Encore!" Wow, the record looks like it was never played but the Gatefold cover is VG++ to M-. Not a bad $1 find anyhoo.

I made the mistake of going to the local used record store today. My 5 year old daughter loves Styx Mr. Roboto so I was just going to look for a copy of Kilroy Was Here. Found a minty one for 4 bucks. However then I had to keep looking and finally settled on a mint copy of Michelle Shocked-Short, Sharp, Shocked. If you have never heard this one, find it, it is awesome indeed. Anyway, I had to lay down 8 big ones...... well, OK, little ones, but I am so used to paying a single GW that it hurts to pay so much ;)
