The Official -Technics SL-1600/1700/1800- Owners Thread

As a new member this seems to be the place for my first post, have recently purchased a 1700mk2 to replace my 1310. Was I was doing the right thing? Would I notice any improvement? YES! A great step up I'm an instant fan, much more musical, altogether brighter (& a looker!) a keeper for sure.
It came near mint with an Ortofon vms 10e & only needing the usual belt change, so quick fix with a rubber band until the real thing arrives from Germany later this wk.
In the past I have owned a 1210 & a 1300 both great TT's but I have never been happier than I am now.
So sign me up it's official, I'm a very proud owner.

They are pretty nice, aren't they?

Welcome to the club and to AK!

John

Thanks for the warm welcome, posting from work at the mo! a slow day at the shop. Will try & post some pics when I get home & have the more computer savvy missus to help me!! In the meantime any advice on cartridges is welcome as I intend to build a small collection. Thanks again, Karl...

The thing I've found with this series of tables is that they respond well to a pretty wide variety of cartridges. I think that, earlier in this thread, many of us talked about the cartridges we've used.

When considering these recommendations, it would be good to remember that the "MK1" and MK2 tables have different tonearms of somewhat different effective mass so not every cartridge that works on the "MK1" will be a good match for the MK2 and vice versa. On my 1600 MK2, I particularly like the Pickering XV-15/Stanton 68# series of cartridges with the better styli. Other favorites are the Shure XV15 Type IV and the Acutex LPM M312 III STR.

John

Thanks John, I'll add them to my growing list of cartridge to look out for. Recently sold a shure v15 typeIII to help fund my system, should have probably kept hold of that! It came with a 1300 I used to own, worth looking at some TT (have my eye on a couple at the mo) purely for the cartridge.

Hey, 19karl71, that's a pretty great way to start posting on the forums. Like some of the others, I'll add you to the roster on the next update, and welcome to the club! Why don't you post a picture of that bad boy on here?

Here is my 'bad boy'
A modest set up in the corner, sounds good though.

It's a SA-508 think it might have been called a SA-5800 on your side of the pond. Works well together with the MA BR2's & has aux for her Ipod.

Last night, I was talking to a friend whose 1600 mat is worn out. He was lamenting the fact that it's hard to find a replacement, and I remembered a DIY fix I'd heard about. Anyway, it seemed like I should post that here, just in case anyone else ever runs into that problem.

That being said, let me also ask folks if anyone knows what it is that makes a mat wear-out? His is very stiff, and there were cracks all along it. When you touched it, bits flaked off! Does anyone know what causes that (and how it can be prevented)?

It's weird I've owned or own two 1700 MKII's Two 1800MKII's and a 1600MKII and only mat I've ever heard or read about that dries up is the 1600MKII
Strange :scratch2:

I've got a minty SL-1610Mk2 w/ a KAB TD-1200 fluid damper mounted.
Great turntable, but it's in it's box right now, as I'm tinkering with a Micro Seiki DDX-1000.

I also had an SL-1700Mk2, but sold it to a friend after getting it's bigger brother (he upgraded from an SL-1710Mk1).
Technics definately got it right with the 16/17/1800Mk2's

I've seen several (2 or 3) that have dried out, always a Technics. I don't think I've ever seen it on an SL-1#00 though. The one I recall specifically was an SL-D303.

I'd imagine that Technics used the same rubber compound for all of their mats so it's probably something that any of them is susceptible to. Since it's so rare, though, I suspect that it's at least partly die to something "environmental" like being kept near a sunny window or being stored in a hot attic. :dunno:

Hi all. First post here and owner of a SL-1600. Problem is, it's got that dreaded issue where it speeds up after half a record. I have tried blasting the pots with deoxit, to no avail. I tried looking for the soldering points that may have gone cold, but don't see those on the motor board either. I'm just hoping it's not one of the chips. Now, I'm looking for a reliable repair shop in Los Angeles. Does anyone here have any recommendations? Also, are there any recommendations on where to buy a replacement dust cover?

Welcome to AK and sorry for your problems. Before taking the table in for repairs, you might try hitting all 4 speed controls with DeoxIt again. It frequently takes a second treatment.

You might want to talk to Scott Thompson (scottrt@comcast.net). He refurbed my 1600 Mk2 and did an excellent job. He's located in San Ramon, CA. (I know it's not close by, but at least its in the same state.) :D

That's got to be environmentally related. My 1600-Mk2 sat in storage for over ten years before I got it and the mat is still very pliable. I am wondering if it is UV related...... :scratch2:

"Last night, I was talking to a friend whose 1600 mat is worn out. He was lamenting the fact that it's hard to find a replacement". Standard Technics mats are not hard to find-they are on the auction site and you can still buy them new. they don't have to be specific to the 16/17/1800-any Technics mat will fit.

I would like to add my name to the list! A few years ago, my dad gave me his SL-1800. It stayed in storage for a few years until i put it back into service a few months ago. The table is in near mint condition and ive replaced the cart with a Grado black1. So far im really happy with the sound. I got it paired to a nad 1600 preamp.

No, the SL-1600 Mk2 mats have the cutouts for the LED's. I think it is the only model that has that distinction.

Yes, bought an SL-1600MK2 back in 1981 (loved it, lost it in a divorce), but that model without the cut-outs in the mat is a good boat anchor.
