The P-Mount owners club

I just received this in the mail. I’d been on the hunt for one for years. Six or seven years ago I got a NOS V15LT with an intact hyper-elliptical stylus for cheap. The guy said he wasn’t sure it worked, hence the low price. It didn’t! So I kept the stylus in the drawer. This one showed up on the “bay”, and I immediately got it. Not cheap, thou. Mounted it with my stylus on the SL 10. Sounds incredible.View attachment 2397803View attachment 2397804

I used a V15LT on a Technics SL-7 for many years. It still sounds fabulous today. Its a shame Jico does not make an SAS replacement stylus. I only have one more NOS N45LT stylus left :(.

to remind those who have been following along since the beginning of this thread, the original Blue Point was actually a PMount in a cheap styrene adapter. look at this pic:

https://www.stereophile.com/content/sumiko-blue-point-blue-point-special-phono-cartridges

the weakest part of the puzzle is that mount which was recognized early on but after my purchase of the BP. then a company named Lyle Cartridges came along and made a distinct improvement in the low and high-frequency performance of the cart. it was an aluminum block with two side setscrews to anchor the body in the mount. it also had been threaded for the elimination of the need for nuts, so just the screws included would mount the cart in the tonearm/headshell.

the next link shows the original mount, and then the Lyle mount in place. it also shows that the poster was smarter than me as he destroyed the original mount so as to use its base as a cartridge clip adapter. the reason that is desirable is the thin pins on the back of the BP1 would otherwise require one to tighten the cart clips on the wire in the headshell. that mandates the person mounting it to use a toothpick inside the cart clip so when the pliers are tightened, the clip doesn't completely collapse. done there, been that.

https://audiokarma.org/forums/index.php?threads/jaymanaas-sumiko-blue-point-lyle-mod-kit.362524/

ostensibly, one could just mount the cart in a pmount tonearm and have a very nice upgrade over the usual AT cart included with the TT. OR, now that the Lyle unit is no longer, a 1/2" adapter from an AT or other pmount cart can be utilized as they were made from better materials and thus more formidable.

"Model 107"... obviously an Audio-Technica P-mount cartridge in a half-inch-mount adapter, but what is it? A house brand?

Snagged a nice Shure V15 LT the other day, need a stylus for it. My only concern is the cantilever length on the replacement styli.

The m92e is a 1350 ohm cart, it's OK but 1550 ohm carts sound better. Look for an m104/5, dt25/35p, rxp3/5. These are similar to m95 and m97 carts. N75/91 stylus will work if you cut the sides off the grip. N70 or any stylus made for v-bottom carts will fit (excepting v15III-V.) The v15Vx, RSv15 will fit. The EVG n95 or 97 nudes work great and there is an n92e nude too.

That’s the ubiquitous AT p-mount “wedge” cartridge. Similar to the AT95 in sound and internals. It was sold under many, many names, such as AT311, AT331, AT100x, AT 1001/2002/3003/6006, AT3472, and on and on. Many styli available today, from nude elliptical, bonded VL, bonded elliptical, bonded conical, carbon fiber cantilever, aluminum cantilever.

Good day to all.
Let me introduce myself: Enthusiast of good audio; professional doctor; Possessor of an entry-level audio system or a little higher (Marantz PM6006 amp; BW DM602 S1 speakers; Marantz CD5400 CD player; Denon DPN800NE network player and the component I love the most is TECHNICS SL-10 turntable).
I live in Montevideo, Uruguay.
About 2 years ago I bought this second-hand turntable and it is in impeccable working order and aesthetics.
It did not bring the EPC310 capsule. In its place was the EPC P30S with its well used needle.
I have bought the JICO substitute but I have not been convinced by its performance.
I am using an AudioTechnica AT 112EP in which I have installed a used needle from an AT440Mla.
Sounds better than the Technics with a JICO needle.
My question is what is your opinion about Grado Prestige series 2 or beings 3.
I have also seen LP Gear CARBON FIDELITY CFT4PSE.
I appreciate your opinions.
Greetings.

Hi Josem,

It's possible that the P30 needle from Jico needs more tracking force. The reason is that many aftermaket replacements are designed to have the aluminium plate on top of the original P30 transplanted to them, so as they are supplied these styli are too light. You can either up the tracking force, or add the plate or other suitable weight (if I remember rightly the plates weigh about 0.35g).

Coincidentally there's a thread concerning this just today been brought back to life on vinylengine.com. You might want to have a look.

If I had known this back in the days of using P-mount cartridges it would have saved a lot of frustration.

Nice setup. I considered a similar Marantz amp but was put off by reports of bad quality control. You've probably got a good one if it's been in use for a while.

Thank you very much for the contribution.
I bought the Marantz on Amazon.es in 2016.
I've come off a Rotel RA970BX and find this one to have better performance apart from having digital inputs.
I'll look for the thread on vinylengine

The Grado's are a bit of a love/hate in terms of their "sound" - highly loading insensitive... so you really cannot "tune" them with loading like most MM/MI's

Also the p-mount grado's are only nominally p-mount - you may (will!) need to adjust tracking force / tonearm - so it may be a problem.

The AT112EP is a great option - if you want an upgrade try to find one of the exotic needles for it... boron or beryllium cantilever - just make sure it is one that tracks at the right force for T4p.

If you want to try something different - get one of the Shure p-mount cartridges and fit a Jico SAS to it.

The AT and Shure are both highly tunable with both resistive load and capacitive.

Hi, Josem. Welcome to AK.
I'm running an Audio Technica VS245LP on my SL-10. The cartridge is identical to your AT112EP, but with a line contact stylus. Sounds fabulous. I really want to save the original stylus, so I've got my eyes on this: https://www.jico-stylus.com/product/atn152ml/
It's a shibata type stylus, that tracks at 1.3g. Should be good, so I will take the plunge any minute.

Thanks for advising. I have seen this stylus ($136), but my question is whether it will fit the AT112EP cartridge.

Hugo65 advised me https://www.jico-stylus.com/product/atn152ml/

If you can find a NOS ATN155LC - it has a beryllium cantilever

the ATN150SA is a step down with a tapered aluminium cantilever

The Jico ATN152mlp (and other) - is a heavier straight cantilever - and sadly, they don't make a SAS equivalent for their AT replacement needles

The ATN440ml needle is actually very good - but if you can get hold of one of the now very hard to find beryllium cantilever models - it would be a definite step up.

Hello. Thanks for the opinion.
I have noticed that the AT112EP cartridge performs better with the ATN440Mla stylus. Mainly in the treble, clearer, more crystalline. It resembles the AT 440 Mla cartridge.
Now I ask, would the ATN155LC stylus fit into the body of the AT112EP?
I am aware that the weight of the cartridge is increased.

Yes it does fit... and yes it slightly increase the weight of the cartrige - definitely worth removing the front piece of the stylus mont (the swing down bit of plastic) - as that will lighten it marginally... The mass/tracking should still be within the T4P range.

Hello. I finally decided on Grado Prestige 3 Green P-mount. Really with some fear, since I never had this brand of cartridge.
I have put it on the Technics SL 10 and I have adjusted the tracking force to 1.6 gr (I have measured it with a specific balance for it). I was surprised at how it sounds. Very good tight bass, amazing mids and smooth but detailed highs.
I have discovered musical details that I did not perceive. The stage has grown in width and depth.
I have another direct turntable but with a radial tonearm, with an Audiotechica AT 440 Mla cartridge.
I always thought that as an entry cartridge it was second to none. Well, the Degree has won.
I listen to one and the other and I have no doubt that Grado is superior.
I know that there are detractors of Grado, but it is not my case.
Regards and thank you for your tips.

That is a really cool SL-10! I have an SL-7. I also run a Grado cart. I picked up a Red 3. I am really digging it. I also purchased the LP Gear T4P Reference VML. I think that so far I really like the Grado a lot better. However, I may not have given the LP Gear enough time to properly time to break in. I've been finding it hard to swap back to it though since I really am enjoying the Grado.

I also kept getting a lot of distortion from records at the beginning and then the last track on many LPs with the LP Gear. This behavior really hasn't presented itself since I've made the switch. That said it could be the ML stylus just picking up more surface noise? It's almost like it didn't track well. I really like the "warmth" that the Grado has. I feel the LP gear (an AT rebranded cart) was a bit harsh. It could just not be a good fit for my table.

Either way, nice pick! Enjoy those jams and the I really enjoy the look of these tables.
