Seeing this thread jogged my memory.
I said to myself "Self, don't you have a cassette deck stuck away somewhere... and isn't it a Pioneer Elite?"
No more full sized wood on the sides of the equipment, just a sad little vestige of what went before.
I plugged it in, the lights came on.

Per that guy's site, 1985. Or 1989. He gives both dates. Apparently "Elite" gear did not have the word "Elite" on it at first.

I need help
Pioneer Elite SC-27 Receiver. I love it. I bought it solely to have a receiver with multiple AV hookups (Component, S-video, HDMI) switching into one HDMI output for my projector. What I ended up getting was a surprisingly excellent unit with an absolutely fantastic preamp section, in 2-channel, that I routinely use for just stereo music listening either integrated or with a Luxman or Levinson amp.
And it works quite well at what I bought it for- passing a video signal.

I have a VSX-01TXH but it isn't really vintage so not sure if it counts here. It sure is a nice HT receiver though.
It's not vintage, but it is Pioneer. 
For my modest HT I chose the Elite SC-05. It might be the baby of the SC line, but since I picked it up brand new in sealed box for about 60% off I wasn't complain'n. It had everything I was looking for. I love the sound of this receiver and the B&O ICEPower Class D amps. Nothing I've owned has ever sound smoother and richer than does this AVR. It simply does it for me - whether watching a 7.1 channel HD movie, or stereo music.

Prior to this purchase, I had joined the AVS forum site and quite by accident stumbled on the Elite SC Receiver Owners forum. After a few days reading the posts I knew I had to have one. This was back when some suppliers were heavily discounting them too.
At the time, I had a 'home-away-home' apt in No. VA while working on an assignment. One evening I decided to go to a local BB store and see what their Magnolia room had to offer. To my amazement, there were 2 brand new, in box, never opened SC-05s! Original tape and everything. I thot - this is my lucky day.
So there I was, trying to stake my claim for one and not wanting to leave to go get a basket.
Thankfully, the carts were not to far, so I got one and loaded it up. I could not believe the price marked on the box. Usually, you see open boxed items on discount, but I could tell the original tape had never been removed. Wow! $8 bills out the door. I'm into vintage, but I sure like to listen to my 05, and it's our exclusive receiver in the media room for movies. I don't know about you, but Pure Direct mode just blows me away when listening to 2-channel music!I've never heard another SS amp that preforms like this Pioneer with the ICE amps. I ended up with my SC-27 in much the same way. I really just wanted a receiver with video switching because I bought a projector and couldn't run but one long HDMI cable around the room. So I went to Magnolia down the street here and the SC-27 was sitting there as a demo for sale below dealer cost (also around $800, for a $2000+ receiver!). There were some other boxed elite units but I figured I'd take a gamble on the big one. All was well after I did the force-reset of all the functions when I got home. They had all the speakers set to small...I bet the floorstanders they auditioned with this thing sounded puny!
But yes, in Pure Direct mode, it is truly excellent. It also makes a superb 2-channel preamp if you're ever inclined to run another amp with it. The Class-D amp doesn't sound great with my Quads (they present an interesting load that the Pioneer amp doesn't like, gets all tinny sounding), so when I run them, I use another amp, and the preamp in it is really outstanding. I have a collection of some really nice preamps here and the only one that is better is a Klyne preamp. Even the phono stage in the SC-27 is decent. I'm very happy with it. Video performance is good to...readily switches anything I run into it, quickly, and looks good, everything from HDMI to component and even S-video from my laserdisc player. It was a totally unexpected buy, and as it turns out, one of the ones that I've been the most happy with. I could live with it for two channel, too (but I do like to run a different amp depending on the speakers....many sound great with the ICEpower, though).

My latest project. A-77X. Picked this up a little while ago and after replacing the 'Line Straight' switch with one from a SX-40, making a new cable from the front board to the voltage amplification board, replaced a couple zener diodes and capacitors it sounds wonderful!
Doesn`t say Elite anywhere on this except in the brochure from 1985-86, but this is definitly one of the precursors to the actual Elite series. Very good to excellent cosmetic condition and now it works great also.
Also found the DSS-5`s in almost perfect condition in their original boxes(!) for $35.
I did have to refoam the woofers as they looked perfect but were original and the foam was very delicate.
I`m pretty psyched with this little setup. Listening to it now in the garage while I type this.

I love the Modulus system. Power hungry though. Rated at 4 ohms and will dip to 2 ohms. Not very efficient either. I am using the M-91`s to power each one, bi-wired and bi-amplified.
I used 2 Adcom 555 II`s for awhile the same way but the sound could be quite harsh. The M-91`s have a warmer sound with the Modulus and running 1 M-91 to each speaker definitly allows them to breathe.
