The White Van Speaker Thread To Warn The Unsuspecting

I got my Dynalab 2.8's for $17. The drivers are all marked Denmark and have fairly large magnets. I saw an auction for Dynaudio 2.8's the other day and they looked alot like my Dynalabs so I guess they imitate not only the brand name but also the model number and the physical appearance. By the way, they weren't the worst sounding speakers I have ever heard.

Dynaudio is a very reputable, kick -butt speaker manufacturer from Denmark. I was auditioning their bookshelves for my Arcam kit and I preferred them over the little Totems and B&W I heard.
And, they supply Volvo with high end car audio system installations, too.
Look up some reviews in Stereophile or similar pubs, or their wiki entry.

When some unsuspecting shmo Googles "Genesis" and "speakers" they may conclude they are getting something made by Arnie Nudell's (founder of Infinity) company, Genesis Advanced Technologies, which are truly high end speakers.

Well, except one time when I was attending RCA Institute in NYC and working in Harlem when a gent driving a rather highly modified automobile as to its looks opened his trunk and offered me this rather nice sound system for cheap. Or some watches, what looked like grass seed in a bag or his girlfriend for a couple of hours. I respectfully declined all.

I keep seeing DiVinci speakers and HT set-ups here on CL. It looks like some 3rd party scammers thought they could get $1000 out of them because of the price on the box. Or maybe the white vanners figure CL is another parking lot.

If I see them on CL I post an ad about the quality of Divinci and linked to Wiki's page on white vans so maybe some fool won't soon part with his money while buying $50 speakers for a grand.

The sister of a friend was taken recently. She got a great deal on some $2000 Sutherland home theater speakers, only $250.

She's dippy as hell, but kindly bought them for my friend - who was suspicious without even knowing about White Vans (I told him of course).

The Sutherlands were packaged in a big black and red box FWIW.

This has been going on for 30+ years. It isn't going to stop anytime soon. Too many easy marks out there.

Just a heads up their a couple chumps working the northwest suburbs of Chicago (Carpenters ville, Mchenry, Palatine, ect) their selling BSS (Bull **** Systems) Studio Monitor M-250's, Acoustic Reference Signatures Series Monitors, and JDL monitors. They tried to scam me as I was leaving work this morning.

I've chased out the same guy in the same white van three times from my neighborhood, but he's selling white van meat, with some BS story about it being a "little extra" from a fancy restaurant nearby that will just go to waste if he doesn't sell it.

I live in an area surrounded by dairy cows and cotton fields. There are no good restaurants out here.

The white van scam is alive and well.

I can understand someone who knows absolutely zero getting conned by the white van speakers - sort of. But at best, no matter the story they tell them, one would still have to believe they were stolen. If a guy pulls up and pops his trunk and sells me a supposedly $3k watch for $100.00, I don't care what his story is....they are knock offs or stolen - same with the speakers.
They may say they believed their story, but in the back of their mind, they would be thinking there was a high probability they were stolen.
If someone thinks themselves knowledgeable and buys them - I would be too embarrassed to say anything.
