They think I'm silly!!!

I've now got maybe $50 invested into my "system" (quotes used because its not all functional yet).

Of that $50, about $12 was a new AM/FM tuner (it's not great, but it was 75% off because it was opened and no remote). The rest is in misc wires, compressed air, and contact cleaners. :)

Pioneer:
HPM-1100's
RG-9
SG-9
A-80

JVC NR-50
Technics SU-A6
Technics SL-1700
Teac (something or other AM/FM tuner)

What do you need compressed air for? I guess you plan on buying inflatable speakers.!! :D

speaking of speakers I wish I would come across another pair of panasonic thrusters someone snatched them before I could get over to them.
That goes for a certain pair of Dynaco speakers I saw but didnt get to get my hands on too.......

Compressed air for breaking the dust and spiderwebs loose.

Most of the parts (namely the Pioneer electronics and the Technics pre-amp) are parts my dad gave me many years ago. They probably spent close to 10 years outside in his garage and a few years sitting in various closets of apartments I've lived in.

Basically, at this point, some of those devices really haven't been used in 20 years or so.

I found an old Realistic turntable a while back that was a late 80's flimsy plastic model that had been stored in a dirty garage for about 10 years. It was covered in gunk and I asked the owner if I could have it and he said sure! I just felt like I had to restore it back to what it was when it was new. Buy the time I had finished giving it a thorough cleaning, cleaned and polished the dust cover (a 10 step process that includes sanding, rubbing compound and polishing compound plus tons of elbow grease!) replaced the belt and cartridge, I had about $90.00 into a TT that sold new for $59.00! I gave it to my older brother who had decided to collect vinyl again and he still uses it to this day. So it is always good to save older audio from getting thrown out!

The compressed air is also good for dusting off LPs in a pinch.

I should have bought that Thorens TD-165 at the garage sale for $5... but I didn't know what it was at the time, and it was in really tough shape... :sigh:

Your parents may consider it silly, but just let them know that you could have worse hobbies.

If it's your money, why do they care what you spend it on? Your cash, your choices, your responsibility.

I'd turn it back on them: "Show me ONE thing you use that's 40-50 years old, that still works as well and looks as good as it did the year it was built.":finger:

Or, alternately, you can point to something they use that's all new, and to paraphrase Yoda, "When 50 years old THAT reaches, look as good, it will not? Hmm?":lazer:

Or, my favorite, wait until one of their new digital front-end surround-sound-holograph-projecting-drink-mixing-but-still-sounds-like-crap home theater receivers has to be repaired, but can't because the one tiny chip in that died can't be found, or is only available on a complete replacement board that costs more than this year's current model does complete, so they have to trash it. THEN you invite them to come over and listen to your old "junk":D

So which would you rather drive, a 1970 454 Chevelle SS 4 speed, or a modern Honda Civic? I don't mean, which would you rather feed, but drive? They're both nice and can get to be fun or exciting in they're own ways, but ...

Hardly a fair comparison.

How about a 1970 454 Chevelle SS 4-speed vs a 2007 6L GTO or the Corvette Z06?

From a nostaliga and collector value, sure the Chevelle SS, but from a performance aspect, I wouldn't count the chickens before they're hatched.

New Z06.... hands down... ... had an opportunity to ride shotgun in a '07 Z06... unbelieveable performance...

I like the Chevelle's as well and would love to have one... but damn, the Z06 is a sweet car... :)

RaymondLeggs...

Why should you care what other people think? What concern is it of theirs what equipment you want to listen to?

Tell them politely to take their suggestions elsewhere.

I'd rather drive the chevelle SS 4 speed! :D

A lot of people like to rip on the modern GTOs for their styling, but I like it. Subdued. Tasteful.

And the performance is first-rate.

(Yeah, I know. Off-topic.)

Learned to drive standard on a '69 SS 396. Didn't help much, as you could start off in 4th gear from a standing stop. Then again, I took my driver's exam in a '69 GTO. :D

"And now we're going to learn how to parallel-park. First, accelerate to a speed of sixty-five miles per hour. Okay, now you're going to want to turn the steering wheel ninety degrees to the right while pulling the handbrake. This is known as the 'Elwood Blues' school of parallel parking."

I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are many "better" opportunities out there besides what you are looking at. Trust me, save your change and wait. What you have is just the start of an outstanding system.

Don't get me wrong, what you enjoy is fantastic. That's what this hobby is about, what YOU enjoy. I'm just saying that there are much better goodies out there for you.

Here's my example: I've waited for some nice speakers for quite a while. Along comes some nice Klipsch Cornwalls. Price is right, not high, not low. I bought them sight unseen. Very nice.

6 months later some Altec 604s come along, price is right. They now reside in my living room.

Picked up some nice old speakers this week. Price was very right and that's all I'm going to say.

Along the way many amps and receivers have appeared as well. I'm not saying to not settle with SD and Yorx, there is just way better out there for little more.

Best,
Bob

I do Indeed understand what you are saying.

this the unit I wanted to pay $80.00 for That receiver is BIGGER than any of the newer home theatre/stereo receivers and a lot less gritty /tinny sounding too.

I know the parents will bitch if I mention it so I guss I'll try to see if the Other cheaper but slightly differnt looking unit is still at the other store... (I love them turntable receivers) for some reason they remind me of a good time before I was even born. :thmbsp:

If you like the all-in-one systems, try keeping an eye out for a vintage Pioneer Centrex or a KLH compact. If memory serves, some of those Centrex units had an 8-track or cassette, halfway decent speakers and a belt-drive turntable with a reasonably light-tracking tonearm. I'd even venture to say some of the Panasonic compacts probably would outperform the SD. Just remember the basic equipment weight rule (heavier = better).

I bet the Panasonic Units came with those "Thrusters" speakers!
I don't even want to know how they got thier name!

Maybe thats why some women don't want speakers in the bedroom! :D

Ha!
Good one!
I wish one of my own kids had the enthusiasm you show for vintage audio
gear. It would make it so much easier for me to decide who would appreciate it and take care of it long after I'm gone.
