Things you don't see anymore.

What's a barber?

haight-hippie.jpg
He's not just scared of a straight razor, he's scared of the scissors too lol

I also remember the barber smoking while cutting my hair, lol
No LOL -- I remember my DOCTOR smoking while examining me when I was a kid, and my dentist kept a cigarette burning atop a filing cabinet and would go have a hit off it during pauses in the action while he drilled my teeth and filled them with mercury amalgam. I also remember him probing around in my mouth with orange nicotine-stained fingers.

Those are definitely things that don't happen any more. Good times.

Growing up in the 1960s/70s, my hometown had:

-- a stationery store, that sold paper, writing instruments and typewriters
-- a hobby shop, that sold model airplanes and rocket kits
-- 2 bowling alleys, both candlepin
-- 2 photography shops, that sold film, cameras & darkroom equipment
-- a coin store that sold collectible coins and postage stamps
-- a one-screen movie theater with a balcony
-- a Woolworth's and a Brigham's

Stand alone drapers / haberdashers shops.
Lines of little square glass fronted boxes containing biscuits along the bottom front of a counter.
Rows of glass sweets jars.

Guys with flat top hair cuts, columbia house adds (you know 10 lps for a buck, Coke machines with glass bottles.

I don't know if Forney is east enough to be called East Texas ? They're trying real hard to be assimilated by Dallas, which isn't why I moved here. I'm suprised the Brookshires has survived the onslaught of Walmart, Mega Kroger, Aldi, Walgreen and CVS, but they stay packed.

Naw, but you are in my neck of the woods my friend. I'm near Seagoville & there's one there along with a very nice Brookshire's in Kaufman! I go there for the deli seafood & meat sometimes.

The local farmer who drove around town in his huckster truck selling vegetables.
Same for the local fisherman who made the rounds every Friday.
And one of my favorites - the tinker's truck. He would sharpen your knife or ax, put a new edge on your shovel, fix holes in pots, mend just about anything.
Did anyone mention shoe repair shop. Town I grew up in still has one, and he can still resole your shoes.
Man do I feel old, but glad I can still remember things. lol :D

Water rockets.

We had those in the early 70's, crazy dangerous handheld devices, like Lawn Dart or Jarts. What a crazy game that was to entertain kids. My cousin launched one of those projectiles that landed right on my foot, no shoes . Should have been paying attention.

Not sure if this has been mentioned but I never see kids doing yard work, like mowing the lawn or raking leaves.
