Just finally got the cabinets yesterday, the drivers have been here for a while. I probably won't start a thread as there isn't much to say about 604's that hasn't already been repeated a few times, but here's a peek at em.

In the past i would have told you that these are some of the best built cabinets Altec made, of course it's now obvious that Altec didn't make em, at least not this pair. These are early, circa 1975, the grills even have the old style rectangular Altec badges which i've never seen on a 620/mod 17, i've always seen them with the same round Altec Lansing badges you see on 14's 15's and 19's.

......... and Allan, thanks for accepting my rant, i took your advice and also got some insight from one of the "pros" and it seems my drivers are probably fine and my networks suck.

WOW! I think I need a pair of those! And an aircraft hangar in which to enjoy them.:D
 
Scuse me.. Each pair.. I messed up.. but for the drivers that are in these, and the condition, that's a pretty fair deal.. If these would have been around when I was looking for mine, I would have bought these over mine...

ew crap.. not such a great deal after all.... Glad I wasn't bidding on them, but if I was, I would have read a lot better too..
 
Would be interesting to know what's in the 908's for diaphragms, if they were swapped out for aluminum or pascalite that'd sweeten the deal a bit, but still not enough. Stock 908's have symbiotik phragms.

As they are, the internals are worth 600-750 per cab, that makes for a pretty expensive VOTT box at an asking of 1200 ea.

They're still gonna be for sale for a while.

1200 a pair would be a pretty fair price, and i'll wager that it'd still take him a while to move all of em at that price.

Howdy bowtie,

Can you clarify your statement?
Is it that the Hill Craft cabs are non-altec in some respect?
From my understanding, HC was a company that built cabs (for) Altec.
My A7's have the same HC stamp.

Howdy Gearfreak, i think it really depends on the vintage. Altec did indeed have their own cabinet shop and manufactured many of their own cabinets. But i wouldn't hazard a guess as to the years and models. I've seen a few sets of model 17/620 cabinets over the years, this is the first i've seen with the hill craft stamp. I have in fact on other cabinets seen the QC stamps and date coding used by Altec with no other identifiers to suggest an outside manufacturer, these are almost universally the lowest quality Altec cabinets, and were usually of the utility/industrial variety.

It's my understanding that Hillcraft built cabinets for a few companies besides Altec, and early on the company used "Hill Brand" as a name also. Many months back an AKer posted some smaller altecs in Hill Brand boxes.

I think Cabinart was also in the playing for a short time.

FWIW, it's been suggested to me by some far more knowledgeable than i, that the "Hill" in Hillcraft is short for Hilliard, and the company was indeed owned by the son of Dr John K Hilliard. I can neither verify or refute this, i merely "parrot" it.

The only "constant" with Altec, is that there will be exceptions to every rule.

Good info. Perhaps that's why mine (hillcraft) are actually still sound. The corners are well on their way to being gone, prior life with a band apparently.
Lesser construction might've lost integrity by now.
 
I am in Toronto and contact this guy. He submit a lots price offer seems reasonable. I just want one pair. So maybe we can buy it together. Find other 14 buyer, I can collect and buy them, ship them to everywhere you want.

I just like Altec so much.
