I figured with all the hate and bile threads aimed at one or two specific bands, I'd lay it down for whole genres.

The following music (ha,ha!) is forever banned from my house:

1) Death metal: sounds like a variety of tortured animals gasping for breath backed by monotonous mechanical beats. The most amusical experience I have ever had was hearing this angry rubbish.

2) Opera: Screaming with style in languages I don't speak like italian. I don't care if they have multi octave ranges and articulation. It's still fancy bellerin'

3) Gangsta rap. Sorry, not interested in "bitches" and "Ho's", prison/gang records or other males sexual prowess and penis dimensions. There is such a thing as "over bling." Hey! That rhymed! I could e a rapper. Not.

+1 on opera, anyway. No less a personage than Sir John Gielgud once was said to have remarked that most opera sounded like-"2 skeletons copulating on a tin roof in the middle of a hailstorm..." NOT a big fan of Rap, Gangsta or otherwise, & death metal sounds like an old start/cold start of a D-9 Cat that hasn't been awakened in 25 years..

I hate to say so but I agree. Oh well.

There is something comical about Death Metal. I remember many years ago seeing a video of Venom and laughing my ass off. There is something very Spinal Tap-ish about it. I have a very angry brother who listens to that stuff. He's one of those people who always tries to sound smarter than everyone else and mispronounces alot of big words in the process. The only thing funnier than the music itself is listening to him pontificate about King Diamond.

Rap is just ****, period.

Opera I can take in small doses. I like Maria Callas.

Slayer aren't death metal, and Venom weren't either.

This is why I like the old stuff - cookie monster vocals were practically non-existent until Death (the band) fused it all together to form death metal.

If you enjoy the 'comic' aspect of Death Metal, look up a Chicago Band "Maggot Twat". For a few years they were the most hated band on the death metal scene because their songs are all about sex and goofy ****. They 'get' how funny the overly serious / dark metal is. They love the 'metal' but also would rather have fun with it.

In my house there is no rap, no disco, no jazz, no grunge, and nothing newer than 1989. There is just no point.

I am vehemently anti-Anti-Folk.

Folk music is way to important and ethnologically relevant to the human condition and shifting zeitgeist to be mocked.

+1 for folk.

Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, etc...good messages IMO, especially Joni...:D

I call that puke rock.. sounds like someone puking..

I prefer hairball rock. My cats are awesome at it.

About this banned business. Are there legal steps to take, with forms and such? My house is Journey and Steely Dan free, but I don't think I notified anyone. I'd hate to have a copy of Aja get slipped through the doors.

Also, good metal is very technical and obscenely hard to play. While I won't say that I like it I do appreciate it for how much it channels good jazz.
