Three-Way Horn System w/ PRV D2200Ph Midrange & ZXPC 18x10 Horn

Thanks. My Cornwall 1’s with new ZXPC 18x10’s and PRV D2200’s will be done shortly. Once evaluated, I will post comments on my impressions.
I'm sure you will have a positive experience with this combination of driver/horn. The midrange opens up and the micro-detail and transient response are amazing.

Fired them up tonight. Did someone mention midrange? It’s here in full force. From my limited time listening, they sound really good. Lots of midrange clarity and it seems like less boomy bass which is good. I’ll keep listening over the next few weeks but my initial impression is positive but my gut feel is the crossover needs tweaking to smooth things out a bit. But even as is they are very enjoyable. I’ve never heard such attack from Hans Theesink’s guitar. I’ll probably come looking for crossover advice in the near future. Right now just using the Type B with the added .25mH choke.
Made them with basic plywood in efforts to match the decorators. The sub in the photo is not used.

Very nice. Once you get the crossover fine tuned to your liking and listening room, you'll be one step closer to audio nirvana.

Welcome to the world of bigger horns and drivers. I joined 16 years ago after Jubefest 2007's introduction into the PRO world of speakers. Never went back except for Super Heresy mods for Surround Speakers (inspired by Klipsch Pro versions) with DaveTN's superior tweeters.

What is the dispersion like with the PRV and ZXPC? Since this appears to be a "shorter throw" horn than the K400 , I would assume it is better but by how much?

It's a Tractrix Style horn, totally different from PWK's K400. I'll let you know when I measure it.

I did not measure dispersion. Most, if not all, of my listening is on axis. In addition, I'm more concerned with the "sound" of the horn which the dispersion will have an effect on, but the dispersion won't define its main sound characteristic.

I have not mastered measuring dispersion yet, but maybe one day.

I gave up measuring off axis. Used to do multiples but now only do on axis and 30 degrees. Good enough to know the curves.

  1. I've ended up with a modified B-2 of sorts....but with a 68uf cap paralleled with the woofer. Also originally had a 7uf leading to transformer to lower the xover to the mid.... .however, like one mentioned the mids were n full force. I dropped it actually from tap 3 to tap 2 with a .500mH inductor in series. Everything snapped into balance so far....leaving either the DE10 or DE120 tweeter on tap 4. I know that supposedly the prv and k55 have the same impedance matching for direct substitution...but idk...maybe it's just my room. I just decided to drop it a tap and see..... as it is an 8ohm driver. It seems much more balanced especially for louder levels. And the usual Cornwall type bass returned when dropping it to the 2 tap ......it's easier on the ears at closer and lower levels too. I can't wait to be able to finish the speakers in a more permanent way, but for now it sounds great this way. On tap 3 it had a tendency to chase people into the next room, sans a random uber perfectly recorded piece of audio. I've been testing them with various types of amps and on tap 2 it seems universallly better in my room. 14x30 or so n size.

We all hear differently The shape of our head and (angle) of our ears can make a profound difference in sensitivity to different frequencies.

I have mine on tap 3 for my LaScala's. The original position of tap 4 is just too forward for me.

I hear that.....and or depending on the room/furniture, etc...if one moves the midrance down to the 2 tap vs the 3 tap with .24 inductor, does the autoformer necessitate a change in inductor size like cap size? for example explaining why I went from .245 inductor on 3 vs .500 on tap 2....essentially doubling the inductor value......or is that a constant?

It's definitely the one different thing between it and the K55......the PRV keeps on going to 9KHz and needs to be shunted and allow more sound from the tweeter.

I had a similar issue with my super heresy project and PRV D270PH-S drivers. Fortunately, the Universal Network that @THD+N posted took care of the driver overlap and really improved the sound.

I think mine are on Tap 4 in my LS.
I should probably double check and see if this is how Bruce actually had them wired up.
He had some EV 1828R drivers in the midrange when I got them.
But it’s seemed to play well going from the EV 1828R > K55-V > D2200PH, with no other changes besides chopping the front out and mounting the 18x10 horn.

edit: It looks like the 1828R was also an 8ohm driver.

Hmmm......thats one route I have yet to go with the crossover in terms of using the swamping resistor on the autoformer. I may try a version of the B-2 network except have 6.8uf as the first cap before the autoformer. At the very least to get a gauge. But that also still runs the PRV all the way out and unlike the K55 which drops off at 6kHz the PRV still has plenty of output out to 9kHz. Just need to figure out the inductor value for the mid (I've got both .5mH and .245mH on hand).....The B-2 uses a .245 in parallel to the tweeter as a 2nd order.....and I've seen both values used in series from the autoformer with the mid (K55 and/or PRV). I'm using a B&C 120 tweeer atm instead of a DE10....either way I'm more concerned with stopping the output of the mid above cutoff as opposed to sharpening the skirt on the tweeter as they can go lower than the K77.

Any follow-up comments after listening for a month?

IMO, adding the "swamping resistor" to a Heritage network allows you to easily modify and make incremental changes more easily than just modifying a normal Heritage network.

Some material sounds fantastic, but most a bit too forward. Funny timing for you asking as I was just about to make a change on the Type B. My 1st step was going to be simply go to tap 2 instead of tap 3 on the mid and listen for a while. After that I was going to insert my B-2 networks with the .25 mH coil on 3 or 2 depending on what I hear on the Type B on the tap 2. I know this is not very scientific and maybe throwing things out of balance but just want to experience minor changes first. After this I am leaning towards a universal variant with the swamping transistor. I am also wondering if mounting the larger mid horn on top of the cabinet and above the SMAHL is contributing to the forwardness. I appreciate any comments as I am only relying on what I hear and my changes are not based on calculations or measurements. I’m sure that upsets a few here but I don’t have the technical knowledge or equipment. Thanks.

i was in the same boat as you a month ago, flying by the seat of my pants and trusting my flawed ears and relying on the guidance of @ClaudeJ1 @Daveintn and @THD+N. I’m still relying on them, but also have a measurement mic to quantify what I’m hearing and am learning to use apps to get me where I want to be. It’s a process and a journey, rather than merely a destination and that suits me fine.
