TL vs Overdamped BR - Opinions?

CARBON FIBER for enclosures would require some very expensive cutting machines depending on the thickness..

Carbon fiber is used in the bolts of projectile weapons known as a crossbows.

Carbon fiber is stronger then hollow aluminum crossbow bolts.

I think it would melt like plastic being cut, with friction unless the blade was cooled by proper lubrication..

I do not know what dampothane is?

Keeping workers employed with new automation is a reflection of the owners of the company.

The NHT VT-1 was 2x4.5" in a "TL" type column that terminated in a HH resonator. However, the wave lengths involved in pulling an extra octave of bass out of a 4.5" woofer might not scale down to 30 Hertz.

I am pretty sure Ken just pointed out the shape of the ported enclusure being TL type column reinforced my opinion about the shape of ported designs affecting their sound.

Most things will have some effect on the sound. I can assure you there isn't anything boomy about my ported woofer cabinets I built for my Lambda TD15s. I'm sure going very slightly overboard on the bracing helps things a bit.

Dnewma04 I did not know you built speakers. When using a 15" driver like that the bracing is absolutely necessary. The bracing required for anything over a 10" is just as complicated to build as a t-line.

You could probably crack some old plaster walls with high enough spl.
Maybe even vibrate poorly framed construction loose.

What listening purpose are they used for ?

I was dead serious about stink bugs in the warm months. They even get inside closed vehicles.

I've known Dave as a speaker builder since the mid 90's, although back then it was mostly car sub type stuff. I'm sure he'll be more than happy to fill you in about those speakers but I'll put in my $.02. He had them at AK Fest '10 as bass/mid cabs to go with DIY Unity horns. The crossovers were built just before the fest and tweaked as it went on. By the end they sounded very, very good. The sensitivity is pretty high (something like 97dB@1W1m, IIRC) and the bass is fantastic in those cabs.

It is unfortunate that many people are so arrogant about tweeking. How can a design be perfected without it. Switching the vakue of R1 in a tweeter circuit is a crime to some people. It does not take very long to do with alligator clips. Nothing wrong with test crossovers made outside of the box.

Ray pretty well nailed it. At the fest the first day, they were used as a bass supplement to some Murphy Blaster MBOW1 speakers that I built. When taking the stress of anything below 400hz away from the little 2 ways, they were able to play comfortably at volumes I didn't anticipate. Later in the day, we connected up a pair of yuichi (sp?) horns with TAD 4001 compression drivers crossed at 600hz, approximately. At that point, they sounded great. Saturday night, after closing up the demo room, I tweaked the crossover a bit with the Unity horns until I got something semi-acceptable setup for Sunday. 400hz crossover from the Lambda to the mids in the unity with a 1200hz crossover to the compression driver was the setup on sunday. All I had was generic CD compensation available, so they were a bit mid heavy, even with tweaking.

Dnewma04 how many liters, cu.ft are the sub enclosures? They must weigh a lot .

Another reason for speaker builders to exercise. Trying to get large enclosures up the stairs out of a basement is the worst part. Also getting the wood into the basement is quite a workout.

I wonder what near maximun spl is with how much wattage. How big is the amp you are using ?

5.5 cu ft for the bass cabinets. They aren't really subwoofers, I have 3-4 subs to handle sub-bass duties. These cabinets will play down to 35hz in the room at 97dB 1w/1m.

I sprung for the Apollo motor which adds some power handling, but the regular motor version is rated to handle 500w. I suspect these would handle a good 700w each thermally, with some mechanical restrictions that would hit earlier. If I high passed them about about 80hz, I could go to the full thermal ratings without much of a problem. I have a friend who uses them in his club and said that the power compression is so low that he doesn't need to kick in the subwoofers anymore where in the past, about an hour into any show, he'd have to turn on the subs because the power compression would get to the JBL and EV drivers he had used previously.

Power compression is ridiculously low. I don't have the specs in front of me, but I read a thread where someone measured power compression at just over 1dB at 500w. I believe at rated power, most of the pro JBL woofers experience close to 3dB of power compression.

I use amps ranging from flea power tube amps (couple of watts on a good day) to 200w per channel solidstate stuff.

I wonder if peanut oil has a use in loudspeakers . It is used to make the brake pads with other fibers. I think it's main use is to dampen the noise.

I can't see why it wouldn't work, although I can't believe that it has superior sonic qualities than Snake Oil.

Has it ever been used ? Could it be used in tweeters?

A friend works at a factory where they make the brake pads. He smells like fresh roasted peanuts after work.

They have ventialation in the factory because of the smell.

I think it has actually made some of his deer hunts a success.
He smells like food to a deer.

Fresh roasted deer smells like food to me, although Bald Eagle or Spotted Owl is said to be even better.

The owl and eagle are protected. Do you hunt Terry?

We have a problem with deer it's called crop damage. It sure has deterred from listening time. That is why I have a TLR-1 good listening.

No time for hunting around here, I keep having to shoo away the Eagles and those pesky Deer.
I think the last time I went hunting was in the fall of '66.

However, the Racoons, Coyotes and Cougars have certainly become more bothersome than ever and it would be nice (and safer), if they weren't quite as numerous.
