Hi, just thought l would post this as l haven't come across it before and curious as to whether anyone else has seen it happen.

The transistors are original Hitachi 2SC1061's in a little Pioneer. BTW none of them were shorted but a couple were showing unusual B-E junction measurements.

Cheers.

This may happen if they overheat due to too much thermal grease. This tends to dry out and become a thermal isolator. Chip failure due to an overload condition also could cause this. Whichever the case, replace all power transistors after finding the root cause of the failure.

Hi, yes l also thought it may have been caused by overheating. Of course, they are binned and ALL transistors have been replaced not just these, drivers because of possible stressing and others for other reasons.

Cheers.

I have seen transistors blow up and just leave the stumps of the 3 legs behind. :(

I have also seen this due to a short downstream, not pretty is it. I just haven't seen this slight cracking/separation before, it should be mentioned all four were showing signs of this.
