The Mendelssohn is a very heavy-handed, plodding, tedious interpretation. I had expected more from this organization.

This showed up on my door-step yesterday!

This tape was manufactured somewhere between 1972 (when the performance was recorded)
and 1974 (when AMPEX stopped making prerecorded tapes). The Library of Congress says
the Black Vinyl 2 disc set version was published in 1973. Since the tapes are usually
published after the records, that makes the window for manufacture 1973 - 1974. This
is all significant because this thing is still in it's cellophane (not shrink wrap)
wrapping!! 39 years and it is still pristine!!

The collector in me said "Don't touch it!!"

The audophile in me went and checked the reviews.... and found nothing but rave reviews
for this version of Attila. He also found that he had paid less than an MP3 download
would cost.

We both tried to determine if there was any collector value and were totally unsuccessful.

I am about to break the seal on a 40 year old tape and savor its contents (much like
a fine wine) Wow, great Idea, I might just wait for the night, turn the lights down
and also break the seal on a fine wine to go with it.

Interesting. If it was me, I'd play it. Attila was just recently performed here in Seattle, and would be interested in hearing another interpretation. I did not attend, but one of the performances was broadcast on the local FM. Apparently, this one is not staged as often as many others.
