Today's Jangle Pop Playlist

Jangle - like it sounds. Jingle with a twang. Bright slightly distorted bouncing two-chord patterns. One of the chords is a minor. Lots of upstrokes. Emphasis on bright slightly reverbed chimey sounds. Too much fuzz and it becomes Garage. Too much picking and it becomes Surf or Psychedelic. This is close but no cigar - too much fuzz IMHO. A twelve-string would have made it a slam dunk.

Even I could play this one. E - F#m - E - F#m - E - F#m ... Then you bridge it with A, D, or C or whatever then resume the two chord pattern.

I think everybody agrees that the Beatles are number one and the Stones are number two. But what about number three? The Yardbirds certainly had more famously skilled guitar players - but there was something missing - une certain je ne sais quoi ...

These days everybody says they love the Stooges but back when it counted if you wanted a Stooges album you'd have to look in the cutout bin. Why? No depth. No jangle.

(1995 - The Year Oasis Made Us Want To Live Forever) America wasn’t ready to forget about Kurt Cobain. It never will, and it still finds ways to profit from his legacy. But it took some shaggy-haired wankers from the UK to remind us that sometimes a group of Brits with jangly guitars can prove to be an enchanting lift out of our collective malaise. We could still mourn, but that shouldn’t stop us from wanting to live forever.
