Afternoon Delights...
I saw Kurt Rosenwinkel at The Village Vanguard in NYC.
I saw Christian Sands at Blue Llama in Ann Arbor.
I saw Roy Hargrove twice... first an outstanding, earth shattering performance and again a very disappointing "with strings" performance both at the Detroit Jazz Festival.
Gene Harris is perhaps my favorite jazz pianist.

True story about Gene Harris. My cousin in Boise was connected with the local jazz festival and for some reason Gene Harris was living in Boise at the time and my cousin got to know Harris (‘He was an odd one….’ was my cousin’s assessment). But evidently Harris worked at a local Hotel (Marriot?) and stayed liquored up and played nightly in the lounge.
When I asked my cousin about Harris, he say ‘Sure I’ve met him he gave me some of his CDs, too. Want them?’ YES! was my reply. So I got about 10 of Gene Harris’ CDs and one or two were randomly signed by him. That earned my cousin and Harris warm spots in my heart.

Hey Kingpin, do you remember the year? The last studio recorded cd that I have (It's The Real Soul) was from 1996. He died in 2000. Very interesting story btw, thanks for sharing.
Figured it out...
Life in Boise
- Arrival: Moved to Boise in 1977.
- Local Performances: Played regularly at the Idanha Hotel.
- Later Years: Continued recording and touring from Boise until he passed away from kidney failure.

My cousin gave the stack of CDs back around 2012(?). Now that I’ve stuck my foot in my mouth, I looked over my shoulder and can seem to remember where I stashed the stack. As i remember they were some Concord and….damn now I’m sure which ones. However, I will over this weekend due some digging and turn them up. I used to keep them up all special, but lately space has become “a thing”.
