Today's score!!-BOSE 901-III's-in the garbage!-PICS

Excellent job saving a vintage speaker from the grave!!

Sometimes it's not about how they sound in the end but about restoring a speaker that, like it or not, holds a spot in the history of audio.

Plus, it's always nice to restore something old to it former condition especially in this "throw away" society.

I've done it myself...very rewarding. Continued success!

Thanks vintagegear!

I agree with you 100%.

I hope I love them, as I've been intrigued by these and loved their unique design since I was a teen. Couldn't afford them back in 77, was just starting college. Makes getting them this way even sweeter!

I spent some time this weekend on the 901's and got one speaker re-foam completed. It was pretty easy. The drivers practically align themselves when I glued the outer surround lip to the basket. I made a cardboard ring to put on the outside surround lip that glues to the basket, which I put some weight on to keep them in place while the glue dried. The surrounds tend to lift once the glue is applied and you need to keep massaging them down while checking there's no CV rub. This method worked well. All move nice and smooth! Initially I used the clear glue that came with the surrounds from Simply Speakers to glue the surrounds to the cones. I did one with the glue to the basket and it was a PITA. Too sticky and glue strings kept happening. I used some white glue I had from another surround supplier that worked much better and neater.

I hope to get the 2nd one done in the next night or two.

Glenn

About to refoam some 601 series II's I picked up.

Last refoam job I screwed up. VC rub. But I think the baskets were sagging too far. So, not all my fault.

Your cardboard design is brilliant! I always have trouble with that, so I'll be doing what you did. Thanks for sharing.

Look forward to the report back on how they sound.

One thing that complicates things is sagging spiders. Depending on the driver, I now do the spider as well. Plays such an important role in speaker performance that I'm taking this more seriously, again depending on drivers. More often larger than 10" woofers and where the sag is quite obvious (doesn't support the weight of the cone). Hard to justify if spider isn't available or the spider isn't too bad. One test is "test fitting" the surround. If it helps suspend the cone I don't worry much about it.

The 601's have a larger woofer. I might go with shimming the VC just to make sure. It's pretty much fool prof. Thanks for the cardboard ring complement. It was driving me nuts with the edges lifting constantly.

These drivers are so small, the cones are popping up like dasies in the spring! I need to put the card board ring with some weight on to hold them in place, so I suspect the spiders are in good shape.

You're awesome! You're rolling like a freight train, keep up the great work.

xo, Biggles

Thanks Biggles! After the re-foam and light repair on the EQ, I won't have anything else to work on at the moment. Something will come along soon enough though.

Glenn

Finished the re-foam, may need to replace one driver.

One driver was very difficult to get centered. Figures! Kept feeling a bit of VC rub, but not always depending on what part of the cone I pushed on. All the others are good. I briefly gave a test listen to the first speaker and it sounded fine, without the EQ. I'll listen to the other tonight. Drivers are cheap enough on fleabay so no worries and I have a few extra surrounds.

Fixed the missing EQ power light-PICS

New driver refoamed and replaced. All is good with the speakers.

I replaced the missing red power light in the EQ.
Also fixed the missing chunk ov veneer on the bottom edge.

I soldered the wires to the PC board where one of the power caps is attached.
Then did a test to make sure I had the resistor on the correct LED anode lead, the shorter one, as instructed buy a guy who restores these EQ's. It lit up.
Soldered it all together and covered everything with some heat shrink tubing. I glued a piece if hi density foam that I cut a small hole in to hold the LED in place since the original mounting hardware is missing. Now I have a working power light! :thmbsp:

Good Morning Sir!

Two things, first one is awesome electronics fu there pally boy! I really liked the bend in the led lead right there. That right there made me smile. The second one is thank you so much for not installing some throbbing neon green or blue something or other in the power light hole.

Cheers!

Good morning to you!

I'm a stickler for originality, at least in appearance. A guy who lists his restoration services on fleabay was nice enough to help me out with the parts, diagram and how to connect it all up. Too bad someone along the way pulled the original one. It was a fun little project. Now I just need to get it all hooked up the the receiver and see how these really sound!

Yeah, no kidding! I borrowed a VI equalizer just for fun. It really lightened up the Altecs, but ruined the Wreckedilinears. It should really make those 901's come alive!

Installing a Fad to a piece of vintage equipment is cute for about a week. It won't stand the test of time and makes me mad to even think about it.

Just got a text from a friend who has some surround home theater setup that I get for free. Been looking for one for the bedroom, so we'll see. I'm sure it won't be anything worth posting, but something to play with in any case.

Just when I was putting on my jacket to go buy Altec grill plywood, got a call from a friend and I should have a free piece tomorrow morning. I need to get these things outta the house!

You have some good friends my man! The surround system should be fun to play around with.

Yeah, can't wait to hook these up and see what they can do!
I'm going to be totally objective with these as so many love them, so many don't.
