Transistor Substitutions

that's nasty. Those power resistor do not just go open. They will cause that type of damage when something else goes bad in the circuit. Usually a transistor.

this one from a Yamaha C-1 PSU because some nasty 2SA561s turned into resistors themselves:

Wow! Some nasty resistors there. No damage near my power supply transistors, but could have been a cascading failure. They're being replaced along with new resistors and diodes that the prior owner swapped in that way I know it was all done right.

Yeah, transistor acting up can create some serious heat! They do not have to completely fail either. Had a Pioneer SA-900 that was lighting up like a torch in a few seconds when it was biased wrong, damn heat sink was to hot to touch in about 2 minutes of being on, amazingly enough did not blow anything in the meantime. It came to me with fried resistors all over from another tech - was the first time I experienced such heat generation so quickly.

Thru all of these replacement two of which I seek are not even mentioned.
First 2sa842 and secondly 2sc1681. I don't know about you guys, but the Marantz 2270 pre-drive board has 4 pairs of these, yet there is no indication of an advisable replacement...any help??

2SA842 40V 50mA TO-98 - BC557 (CBE leads) 45V 0.1A TO-92 (Center Base)
2SC1681 60V 50mA TO-98 - KSC1845FTA 120V 50mA TO-92(Center Collector)

OK, so I appreciate the response as always (subs for 2sa842 and 2sc1681), and I ended up using ksa992 and ksc1845 which surprisingly had the same pin-out. Make sure you ALWAYS check pin-outs whenever substituting a transistor. No more thunderstorms in the Marantz 2270.

I would like to add a small update to this thread with regards to the commonly used small signal transistors, now that through hole parts are starting to vanish.

For the 2SA1015/2SC1815 and similar parts:
The KSA1015-Y and KSC1815-Y have much lower gain (typically in the 150-200 range) than the often found 2SA1015GR and 2SC1815GR. If the gain is an issue, one can use the KEC brand parts which are still available in GR rank (KTA1015-GR and KTC1815-GR), or also the nearly identical KTA1266GR and KTC3198GR.

The smaller brothers (and I believe it is the same die but in a smaller TO92s package) of the TO-92 2SA1015GR/2SC1815GR were the 2SA1048 and 2SC2458 which are equivalent to the KEC KTA1267GR and KTC3199GR still being manufactured today. The gain and pin out are the same as those for the original Toshiba parts.

For the 2SA733/2SC945 and similar parts:

Similarly, for the substitution of the NEC 2SC945 rank P or even rank K, or one can use the UTC (unisonic, Taiwan) parts 2SC945G-P which have gains typically above 350 the pin out ECB, and fit nicely in place of the extinct NEC parts or the (usually lower gain KSC945CG from Fairchild).
For the 2SA733P, KEC has made the KTA733P in the ECB pin out and with good gains (typically above 350).

For the 2SA992/2SC1845 and similar parts:

The KSA992 and KSC1845 are still being manufactured by Fairchild / ON Semi at the moment.

The 2SA970/2SC2240 are similar to the KEC parts KTA1268/KTC3200 which although are no longer made, they can still be found in ranks Y, GR and BL.

Dear all, as I have to replace the 2SA725F and 2SC1312F (cracking and noise on the equalizer amp on my Pioneer SA-5500II) I've searched around for a while and came to the conclusion that a good replacement are the KSA992FBU and KSC1845FTA respectively, with the caveat that the 2 old ones are BCE and the new ones are ECB.
Am I correct?
Thanks!

welcome to AK. Yes that sounds like a good idea ;)

Thanks!!:beerchug:
I've explored AK quite a while, and found quite a few good comments (a very interesting guide on transistor too):bowdown::bowdown:. But didn't want to mess up :D
Will change the transistors later...fingers crossed:)

Dear @JoseHH,
I was very happy to read that there still are some good transistors available, and I've been searching for the KEC transistors you refer to, but not been able to find anyone selling these.
Can you please tell who can provide these parts?

B+D carries some, and their stock comes and goes. I found this one for example:
https://www.bdent.com/kta1268-kec-audio-transistor.html
Other suplier is Audiolab GA:
KTA1266GR
KTC3198GR
https://www.audiolabga.com/data_html/1033.html (KTC3199)
https://www.audiolabga.com/data_html/50317.html (KTA733)
https://www.audiolabga.com/data_html/50316.html (KTC945 )
https://www.audiolabga.com/data_html/66788.html (2sa733L UTC)
https://www.audiolabga.com/data_html/27705.html (KTC3200)
I bought a few of each in Bangkok (mostly local shops) I only use them in my hobby repairs so I dont use many. In asia the KEC parts are not rare. Here for example you may find some KEC and UTC parts i mentioned above:
https://www.es.co.th/index.asp I have no idea if they ship outside of thailand.
These components also appear in auctions from time to time.
