That 65 is possibly something that belongs to Tandbergs first language laboratory, along with the Model 10. The 5000 is the student deck for the IS6 language laboratory and is a three-motor, two-track, three-head simultaneous record/playback design unless some special or "un-talked about" editions were made, which is quite possible. Tandberg made a lot of things to order. What the picture doesn't show is the tape transport control panel that enabled the students to operate the deck. The tapes were equipped with a piece of metal foil on the ends that activated an end stop function so it was impossible to run the tape off the reels. The deck itself was out of reach from the students. After all, the big point of the language lab is that you can listen to recorded instructions and at the same time record yourself, so it wouldn't really serve it's purpose without recording capability. The teacher can remote-control all the decks from his/her desk, one of the main reasons for this is to be able to pre-record the desired education material on all the student recorders simultaneously, at the touch of one button. The model 65 may have been used as a (cheap) playback machine for this. Also worth mentioning, is that a cassette deck was offered for use with the IS6. It used the same cables and control equipment as the open reel recorders and was a direct replacement or upgrade.
I have some documentation for the IS6, and i can't find any reference to a playback-only unit. There are a "Teacher's deck" (Model 15-21) and a "Student's deck" (Model 5000). Included on the list is also the other necessary parts, like power supplies, control panels, tapes and furniture specially made for the equipment.

I didn't think about the language lab functionality, I can see where that would mean you want to be able to record at the individual student machine but they have to have controlled that from the teacher station as none of these decks have switching for record vs. playback, no meters or level controls etc.

I picked up a Tandberg 64X recently for very little money. It was being sold by the wife of the original owner. He died in 1981 and the Tandberg has been sitting in the original box ever since with manuals, cables, etc. It apparently was not used much and is in nice shape but should be gone through at some point. Cool looking machine!
No, I haven't unfort. It needs to have some work done on the transport. It was moving very slowly.
