Tuners?

I have a collection myself..
technics st-9030
marantz 2110
sansui tu-517
yamaha nt-810
yamaha t70, t80
mitsubishi tuner-pre da-c10
mcintosh mx113
nad 4025
denon tu-767
teac..some kind of dual amfm tuner 2 separate tuners in one
some kind of radioshack micro tuner

I did get a refund from eBay for the dead Denon mentioned in my last post and I used this to get a Yamaha T-2 in mid-October. More detailed impressions are elsewhere on this forum but it beats my Yamaha T-85 for both sonics and DXing, even with the filter response being somewhat asymmetric. Everything works as it should and it is in very good condition for its age. The sound quality on good broadcasts is breath-taking. So it all worked out for the best in the end.

This T-2 is also silver which I am told is very rare.

Regards,
Nick

If your T-2 & T-85 have not been recapped and aligned all you are comparing is which one has "aged more gracefully", not which can perform/sound better. Both are very much 'top shelf' when refurb'd.

Not beig a fan of FM radio quality I currently have only one tuner. It's a tiny Akai I paid $10 for. However I'm not averse to being converted into a tuner fan, so if somebody wants to sell me a very nice tuner for a very nice price I'm game. :D

Old Marantz. The tuner ,amps with the B in the model number. yep yep yep!

Latest acquisition is a Denon TU-800L for just £22 ($36). A superb combination of excellent audio quality and top-notch selectivity.

Nick

Short list for me, not counting the tuner sections in the MAC-4100 and MAC-1700, and the Marantz 2238 in the garage under a tarp :)...

MX-113 tuner preamp, needing minor tuner surgery, in its natural habitat...

Hooked up for the first time in 20 years today my Pioneer TX-8500II. Seems to need a cleaning. But it is working. Only one major problem that was there when I put it away.

Picked up a Hitachi FT-MD5500 (the UK version of the FT-007) but will play with it properly at the weekend. It has some scratches on top but the front is nice & clean. It'll be an interesting sonic shootout with the Denon TU-800L. I'm not expecting it to DX as well as the Denon though.

Nick

Just acquired a recapped Luxman WL500. Lovely looking and amazingly wide clear sound. Now my no.2 tuner out of about ten I currently own.

Paul, what is your list of tuners in order of preference? That would be an interesting read.

Hi Nick,

I would list them as follows:
Sony ST-5000FW recapped
Luxman WL500 recapped
Rotel RT-1024
Yamaha CT-1010
Pioneer TX-9100
Technics ST-GT650
Kenwood KT-5020
Sony ST-S770ES
Pioneer F-91
Yamaha T-2
Technics ST-9030
Technics ST-9038

So, it turned out to be 12 then! I'm getting the T-2 recapped soon so that should climb up the list, but to where remains to be found out. I recently sold my kenwood L-1000t to a friend who wanted a high end tuner that blended into his modern looking separates system. The Kenwood fit the bill. If I still had it, I would place it in my top five.

Thanks mufster. It's interesting that you have the Yamaha T-2 so low down the list. For me, mine sounds better than the Sony ST-S770ES that I have and still remains my best tuner for audio quality. The Denon TU-800L is the closest, although for some reason with this tuner it seems to depend more on the broadcast or station.

Of course, as always YMMV.

Regards,
Nick

My T-2 is good, but I don't think it is performing as it should. Hence the reason i'm getting it recapped and aligned.

Will be interesting to find how it compares after the recap.

Is that because of the reception, sound quality or both?

I enjoy these in my collection from most liked to less.

Sansui TU-717
Sony XDR-F1HD
Onkyo T-9090
Yamaha T-80
Sony ST-J75

All are recapped and upgraded except the little Sony HD.

The fullest and richest soundstage and clarity comes from the TU-717.
All others offer just a different sound altogether although exceptional. The Onkyo is very clear sounding with detail as is the ST-J75.
The T-80 offers a warmer sound and is also very detailed with a beautiful soundstage. I would not part with one of these tuners.
